Help with suzuki dt 20, smoking or running hot.

Had the rib out today, after 2-3 hrs noticed smoke, steam coming from motor. Headed back to marina and the chap there had a look at it but by then there seemed no problem, he said it could be a lot of things, one being with all the rain something went into the intake to the impeller. He didn’t think anything major because it had still good water output. Went for 5 min trip started fist pull, same thing happened not as bad but called it quits and taking it in for service. It seemed hot at the end of trip. Any ideas? It’s been a great motor for the last two summers.

Thanks if you can help.

I'd take a look at the impeller to be sure. Also worth checking the thermostat.

thanks you two

I had it looked at in town they replaced the impeller and going to take it out tonight for a trail run. The chap said that the lower end was made by johnson and the impeller should be changed every 3 yrs regardless. He seemes freindly enuff but I'll wait to see the bill.

Straight-forward job to replace impeller. Learn to do it yourself and save $$$ and have piece of mind.

books

Would there be a step-by-step book or CD that would have this info? I know I can get an impeller for $16 and would change it probably every spring or at least clean it up before the summer. The book would probably have other tips on how to keep an outboard at it’s optimum running performance.
