Were running a 2004 Honda 150. Great engine and have had two of them. Not heard of any corrosion issues.

The new Merc 150 Fourstroke. Got around 20 hrs on mine now, love it.....well with a look. Just don't tell everyone though....

I couldn't comment on the 150, never tried one. I thought your comment was more about Hondas in general.

No, I was commenting on the 150s, as that was the question raised.

It would be wrong to make such a generalisation on the entire range.

the merc 150 4 stroke is all of 12kg lighter so I would be amazed if this comes into your thinking, it has less warranty, is has sold a insignificant percentage of commercial engines with YAM and Honda having the most.

There is no corrosion issues so please think why someone would post such rubbish.

so how would I move forward if I was you .....

If you can try and get an independent trial i.e. ask the dealers to take you out for a quick spin and make your own mind up. Obviously I would pick a top 3 and different dealers to take you out for each different make.

I would also add that this is a great way of at least starting to get to know them as this will be far more important if something does go wrong than choosing between the different manufactures.

The fact that this was a merc is irrelevant there are bad Honda, Yam dealers as well!

Some dealers will also give better trade in prices than other, and some will even given you a few prices on what your new engine will be worth in x years i.e. we would give you x for it after 5 years with 300-400 hours or y if it has done 4-6 hundred hours.

This will also help you work out how much the different makes will cost you over the years you plan to keep it.

Hope this helps and please before you rule anything out give it a try.

Apart from Honda, you can rule them out before you start..

Four-stroke then Suzuki and Mercury would be top choices. Yam not yet released a latest-gen motor to compete with the apparently excellent Merc and the slightly older Suzuki.

Two-stroke then there's only the one choice, a non-HO 150 would be perfect for you

Honda parts, i find are so expensive, just had to order a starter motor for a BF90, it was over £1000. Could not get a pattern part anywhere for it. Merc starter genuine part for a 90 four stroke was about £300.

Hmmm, I know of two cases of corrosion issues on Hondas. One from Ribnet and another from a local harbour master. Maybe exceptional cases, but there does seem to be a trend from what I've also read elsewhere. I'm not saying they are the only engines that corrode, but thinking they don't corrode would be wrong. Obviously there's potential for all engines to corrodde, simply due to them being made of various metals and being used in saline conditions.

The Honda 150 is pretty frugal if you drive it sensibly, and very quiet. The saddle brackets have a habit of breaking, leaving your engine suspended by only the cables (been there, done it!). I'm not a fan of Hondas, the ones I've had have always had issues.

If I was in the market I would look at either an etec (I love the noise, plus there are servicing benefits. Only real disadvantage is the cost of the oil) or a Suzuki (have run several of these, quiet but still make a nice noise at full chat, and again pretty frugal). Haven't tried a new Merc 4-stroke yet but everyone seems to say good things about them.

PS. Ribex next week at Gunwharf - not too far from you. Might be worth going down and seeing all the options on the water and seeing which one you like the look/sound/smell of.

well, i suppose we could all find something to say about every option out there, but i like my honda 150, never misses a beat, and seems good on fuel to me maybe it's just some engines suit some ribs better than others

People do tend to 'big up' their own stuff. There's no more guilty than 'Chris' on here. After lifelong devotion to the e-tec, he's now waving the Honda flag (although I reckon he still holds a candle for the Ermintroods)
