Gearbox Woes Continuing

Merc 90 4 str. yr 2000.

Well, it just gets worse. Bearing carrier is solid after moving out half a mm. Applied some heat at the prop end of casing, then wedges under lugs. One lug now broken off, so that's £300 for a new carrier. It's all soaking in WD40 at the moment.

Am I likely to do any more damage by heating the gearcase where the inner end of the bearing carrier is? Some constructive advice as to where I go from here would be much appreciated.

Should I just give up and get another engine?

Tony really sorry to hear of your problem. Al is a good guy and I am sure he will fix you up as he did me a couple of times over the years. Hope you are back on the water soon mate.

Hi Billy,

Thanks for that. Just had a word with some other people who've had to use hacksaws before now. I think it might be a replacement bottom end job. . I'll see after I've talked to al on Monday. Might have to take a deep (very) breath and get a new engine. Rather not though, but speed is of the essence as I've lots of arrangements pending.

Hope you ok and managed to catch some of this great weather. I was due out last Friday for a week, and then all this happened.

Good cruising, Cheers Tony
