Gearbox plug seals

Hi i have recently changed the oil in the gearbox of my engine and had trouble getting the seals for the level and drain plugs, they were the fibre type.
I have used o rings from an automotive shop that are oil resistant,is this ok or should the fibre ones be used?
I read a thread previously and this suggested that this was not ok.??
Also i am having trouble getting service parts , i am in the littlehampton area.
Its a mariner 60, 2 stroke 2002..
I am new to all this ,thanks for any advice.

Try to get fibre ones, or better yet originals, as rubber orings will tend to break, deform or not seal properly when plugs are tighted to leg, and plugs need to be bit tight. If old fiber orings are still in good condition after removal, replace rubber orings, put them on untill new ones are bought. Nylon (plain washer like rings) are also very good.

For Mercury/Mariner parts - including the washers, try www.ribsmarineparts.co.uk. They have an online parts catalogue and shop, have been very helpful over the phone and I've had excellent service from them. I recently got a water pump service kit from them and it included the gearbox washers, which were plastic. The original fibre ones had begun to leak.

We have them in stock, we can stick them in the post to you dont use the o rings, the plug should tighten onto the fibe washer not into the thred of the gearbox, the orings tend to rip.
