Tubes of oil is a very expensive way of filling your box, cheaper to it by the litre!

what, you can't find a bit of tubing to push over the existing?

FWIW, the latest pumps from Merc come bubble packed with the pick up detached. if it ain't long enough for your bottle, replace it with a longer one or do as I suggested above. It ain't rocket science.

No-on mine the existing pickup isn't round-it has ridges-and won't seal well enough. It looks too flimsy to force a hose over it without risking damage.

Might be worth me replacing mine as well then

Heat shrink tubing, you know it makes sense! 2nd greatest invention after gaffer tape.

I use one of these. Screw off the end to fill it with oil. Just whap the oil into the gear case with one push. You'll need a wee adaptor of course - find a suitable bolt and drill a hole through it if you're stuck.

Came in the post today, have to say it's allot of money for what it is, even if they charged a tenner for it.
But I'm known for making copper wire out of a penny!

Are the Fibre washers on the gearbox top and bottom plugs just your standard fibre washers?

I did this last week - very messy! I used a 'normal' oil can with a thumb-pump mechanism. just put the tube in the drain hole and pump. Did the job well enough - a little slow, though. Definitely agree with warming the gear lube before use - it's very viscous.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but can't find the answer - is all gear oil the same or do you have to get specific types depending on your engine ?

Most outboard gear oils are , but they arent the same as general automotive gear oils, because the marine stuff has anti corrosion stuff in it incase your prop shaft gets a slight leak
