Fuel Filter

Hey,

I have a Mercury 60HP 2 Stroke outboard...

and I'm wondering about the fuel filter... now this might sound odd (or I might just be being really dumb), but the manual reads:

"FUEL LINE FILTER
Inspect the fuel line filter. If the filter appears to be contaminated, remove and replace."

See first attached picture.

I have a fuel line filter - found that. But it's just inline, rather than the bowl type filter I'm used to seeing, on other motors, lawnmowers etc...

The manual then goes on to read:
"SEA PRO/MARATHON MODELS
Fuel Pump Filter blaa blaa blaa"

See second attached picture.

Now, this looks more like the usual bowl type filter I'm used to - one you can unscrew and extract the filter, o ring and bowl... but ...I dont think I have a SeaPro Marathon
model so don't think this applies to my engine...

but then, it means I don't have a bowl type fuel filter, only the inline type.

Is this normal, or as I just being blind, unable to find the bowl filter?

Also, re fuel line filter, manual says "if contaminated, remove and replace" --- does this mean that they can't be cleaned (as must be replaced with new?). And removing it --- if I just disconnect it from the fuel hose, aren't I going to get myself, the the engine, covered in fuel from the line?

If its got just the inline type under the cowl, you should add a bowl filter before the engine.

add a manual one, in the fuel line between tank and engine? all the external ones I can find are inline types...

Electric start 60hp 3cyl engines use a white plastic in-line filter as standard. The filter shown in your picture is from a manual start/tiller model. The in-line filter can be cleaned out and blown through or replaced as required. As Captnjack suggested, a water seperator filter fitted in-line in the boat is recommended. Make sure the primer bulb is on the outlet side to suck the fuel through the filter.

At least around here, the white inline filters are silly cheap. Maybe $4usd. I consider the inline filter a backup.

I have a very small racor bowl filter rated for 25gph, 10 micron size installed before my 60hp Yamaha. Its not got alot of water capacity but the clear bowl provides some peace of mind about what has been or is being caught by the filter. I prefer it over the metal canister type filters which are common on midsized outboards here.

The guy is in New Zealand. Possibly cheaper to buy the genuine Quicksilver one.

So, it goes fuel tank (tote) --> primer bulb (on hose) --> inline water filter --> engine (and then into the normal fuel process in the engine, thru existing inline filter etc...

The inline filter I have already, in the outboard, how does this different from a bowl filter? Does it not remove water?

The filter as provided in link by rogue wave - I currently have tote (plastic) tanks outside (not inside hull), the fuel line goes straight from them to the outboard... I guess I could run fuel line down into transom, mount filter inside transom, and then line back up, outside, into engine, to keep it 'out of the way'. It doesn't look like something that would apprecaiate being knocked around all the time....!

Sweet, makes a bit more sense now...

Guess i'd also need more fuel hose.

Actually think it'll be cheaper to get stuff out of the UK and sent over (boat stuff very expensive here in NZ! - http://www.smartmarine.co.nz/can-typ...oy-p-8284.html for example is $140 (£65).

And mount it under/inside the transom out of the way?

In the future, I might get an internal fuel tank installed... if i install this fuel filter now, will the new, internal fuel tank be able to take advantage of this already installed filter?

Your revised fuel line set up is correct. With regard to the Water Sep Filter Kit, check out the prices from your local Merc/Mariner dealer. You would need,
1 x 35-802893Q4 Water Sep Filter Kit
2 x 22-89771Q2 Connector
Total price in UK for these is £35.00 inc vat.
You could also see if anybody stocks Sierra aftermarket parts cheaper still.
