Foot throttles

I've read a few times now that foot throttles are ratted better than standard morse type control that most of us use. I hold my hands up as I know jack about them but this seems like fitting a foot throttle to a Yamaha R1 bike.
How do they work? Do they work by keeping the pressure on like car throttles? If so what about when you hit that big out of no where swell?

I know the expensive type like mercury smartcraft are controlled electrically rather than cabled - john cookee on here knows his stuff - his bananashark weapon has a foot throttle - the absolute nuts

What about when you need to keep the power on but your getting bounced about like a Spaniard's honeymoon bed? I'd love to know as being able to have both hands free to steer and keep a grip would be great. I expect they will be far out of my price range! Cheers Olly

Foot throttles are great - but only when you are sitting in a good bucket seat. Forget them if you have a normal jockey seat.

Foot throttles are not recommended at all for your application because as you mentioned when getting bounced around it will be a problem. I use them for tunnel boat applications only and it functions just the same as in your car. Cable with a strong spring so when you let go with your foot it goes back to idle speed. If you look at Offshore type boats, they use leavers and when they are racing, 2 guys to control the boat.

That pretty much sums it up.

In a fast RIB I would definitely have bucket seats and a foot throttle for maximum control. For general use jockey seats and hand throttle are much more versatile.

I use a foot throttle and that's fantastic, have good bucket seats.
Although sometimes I miss the hand lever. So I looked for a combination and found it:

That just depends on how you place it... I use one with a jockey, no problem at all

Thanks for the replies.

Rienier,
What about when you have to stand due to Pollock crunching slams?

I don't know, haven't got one yet. I'm in the state of planning and surching.

It's possible, but you can get easily tired if your legs are weak. I always stand on te back of my foot in those cases and move the throttle only with the top end of my foot.

I've never moved the throttle on accident with waves if I'm standing.

I expect it's something you get used to doing. Now if you could build in cruise control you would have the best of both worlds

Sorry to correct you, but the Smartcraft system is just for instruments, it's the Verado range that are "Fly by wire", and we have fitted a combination foot / hand throttle to that as well - all fly by wire!

We use the "Incontrol" brand of foot throttles that are very well made, and have the option of combining hand and foot throttle together, we used the Mercury part on the Verado version but hid the electronic parts.

I would only use a foot throttle sitting down - it looks like the photo of the jockey set up is with a low jockey and the foot throttle way out in front which would make it much easier to use that a more normal vertical arrangement.
