fitting a rev counter

i would like to fit a rev counter to my 60 bhp johnson vro am i correct in assuming it simply plugs in to the 3 pin socket on the cockpit throttle assembly unit, below the ignition key, just to safeguard the engine from overrevving when towing etc.

On a Mariner control box you plug it into a little socket that comes out of the box. Probably the same thing on yours. Check the colours of the wires first if you want to double check.
