The reason your plate will be rotten inside will be crevice corossion rather than salt evaporation probably, was the plate looking like puff candy in the places hidden from sight?

I came across this on 316L when working on marine equipment in the past where even 316L is destroyed where it is in contact with seawater and kept anoxic, after a while you can easily snap 12mm bolts with your fingers despite looking reasonably solid outside!

I love the term "chavboat", have meant to use it but thought it might cause offence.........now there's a trail-blazer.
So onto chavboats. What I have discovered is that if you want to buy a decent outboard they are very expensive second hand.
Until you buy one with a fibre glass boat attatched.
What you get then is.......all the ancilliary equipment, cables, wiring, bolts etc.
You also get a means of testing the engine on the water.
You'll probably get tanks and whatever other instrumentation, ropes, anchors that come with the boats................but get this, IT WILL MOST LIKELY HAVE A TRAILER INTO THE BARGAIN.
So you get engine (tested), all the bits and a trailer for the price of an engine on its own. All you then do is sell or scrap the boat.
Have I missed something? Yes......you get a way of taking your heavy engine home!!!

This has been done a lot but then people started to take the good engine off the boat and replace it with an old one as people like to buy a "package".

so yes you can save a lot of money this way but it can also cost a fortune if you get one with an engine that needs a lot of work.

I there are no sites like parkers.co.uk that people use for cars to get a what is it worth price so we often see a huge difference in used prices

Add to this most engines are sold with either no hours stated or v low hours ( unless it is newish) as there is no way of checking. Oh and the it has not been used in the sea or it has been stored and not used for x years are other clasics!

There is for outboards

It's called the "3 stroke guide" and is available for £120, it's the equivalent to parkers guide and will give you the book price that the insurers will use when having to pay out on total loss outboards. Each engine has around a ten year fallback. It gives trade valuations, retail prices etc. Not quite a "trade secret" and to be honest the prices are quite unreliable (on the low side) especially on the 2 stroke market as they under-value them on the basis it's obsolete where as everybody knows the prices have soared due to them becoming difficult to obtain and highly sought after.

Downside is its very expensive and gets updated yearly. So it's £120 per year for up to date numbers.

It's not used by the trade to put a value on anything bought or sold for these reasons

Judging by the fact not a lot of people have even ever heard of it (including authorised main dealers) I'd say no it is not that well recommended.

I've not used mine for a very long time. The last time I did it told me to retail a 2002 Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke (3 cylinder, newer grey design) at £900. I've never bought one at that trade, let alone retailing it
