Evinrude or Suzuki

One of my shortlist of boats has the option of the evinrude ETEC 130 or the Suzuki 140 DF. The Suzuki is a little more expensive. Which would you go for and why??

Ive got the 90 ETEC on my present boat and its been a stonking bit of kit.

Thanks in advance

If you were buying a car just for fun, would you buy a Golf GTI or a Prius........

The Suzi, will be quieter, possibly slightly better on fuel, depending on what it's pushing & cost more to service. The Etec will put a big sh1t eating grin on you face every time you hit the throttle & be cheaper to keep. This could very easily go into 2v4 stroke territory which has been covered umpteen times, hence the lighthearted but well meaning initial reply.

Apropos of nothing at all - the last Evinrude Etec I actually saw being fitted to a Redbay at HQ was back in 2008. Since then I've seen them go out with Suzis, Yo-Mama-has, Mercs and the odd Wanda. No-one has said anything bad about them and I haven't heard any reasons - just what I observed...

Not too many tugs going out fitted with Seateks either these days.

What he said

I have an Evinrude 150, my brother has the DF140. Both ribs, mine 7mtrs, his 6.5.

After 5 years driving mine I tried his out two weeks ago. There simply was no comparison on acceleration. The Evinrude just puts a stupid grin on my face whenever I open the taps, the DF left me cold. Probably only a couple of seconds in it to 30knts, but its the way it does it.
Yes I have to buy oil at £40 a 4ltr bottle every month or two, but would I swap? Nope,

You buy toys, assuming this is a toy you're buying, for a reason. If you want consistent, worthy and perhaps a little more frugal, go DF. If you want the stupid grin, go Evinrude.

You asked for reasons, I can't justify owning a 150hp motor that will burn 60ltrs of finest unleaded every hour if I push it, but I'd rather do a few less hours than own the DF, if I had to reign in the boating hours, it's all down to attitude and buying with the heart not the head.

I've run Both.. 130 e-tec,around 150 hours-(on RC 545) now (250 Suzuki DF on R.C 6.8) I should imagine around the same HRS..
The two Bought New, and I consider them both Good Lumps....BUT the 250 realy does Sip fuel compared to the 130... extra 100 horses and not much thirstier!..it is whisper Quiet! AND no oil to worry about.Super Smooth and Faultless running so far.Only thing I replaced on the e-tec was a Ram,and a sensor.
As for serviceing..on the DF (only had the 50 hour) so haven't so far found much difference, and with no oil to buy it should even out...I always had the e-tec checked yearly

Like the e-tec THE 250 has Great Holeshot and Good Top end 48knt-ish,cant comment on the smaller Blocks but make no mistake the 250,pushing a heavier boat than most 7m goes well!

Spot on, and I concur with the stupid grin factor

You generally buy a RIB to spend a limited amount of time having bloody good fun

They should take up rowing.

I'd choose Japanese relliabkty over US every time.

This is a 2 stroke v 4 stroke thread and of course a 2 stroke is going to be more fun but the 4 stroke will be more reliable and hold its value better.

You should also look at the new mercury 150 as its a lightweight powerful engine that's much simpler than either the etec or suzuki. Both good engines but have a look.
