Etec 90 not starting

Hi

Any ideas

A friends 1 year old low hours Etec 90 struggles to start as in the starter motor struggles to crank the engine over, the dealer has
updated the software + diagnostic test
replaced the battery with a bigger one
replaced the battery leads
But no faults found with any
I've asked about battery draining but they claim to have tested it and no problems
The dealers next move is to replace the starter as they think it maybe the problem

Any suggestions, ideas or heard of anything similar for the dealer to look at as the weather is good and my friend wants to use it

James

Is the lump quite a way from the battery? If so, did the dealer up-rate the leads? If they're not 'man' enough, they'll get hot and deliver b'all to the starter.

Should be easy enough to drop a meter across the power leads to the starter motor. A drop to less than, say 10.5 to 11.5 volts would be cause for troubleshooting.

I had similar problems caused by the battery cut off switch . It allowed just enough current to flow so that the solonoids clicked , i thought the battery was flat at first ,then searched eveywhere for bad conections etc . I then switched it on and off a few times and it worked OK .

James I posted that because IMO the battery switch I have is just a poor design , and i remember the dealer having problems when i picked the boat up . he was moaning at his lad for not charging or conecting the battery properly and was twiddling with everything so never actually tracked it to the isolator even though he turned it on and off a few times . Its worth by passing incase he has the same crap make of switch

Ideally for a 5 meter run you want 40mm sq cables. I had problems with m 115 not cranking properly and the cables were at fault.

Thanks for the ideas

Little bit more info

The engine is on a new 5.4 searider, boat is in SW and the owner is in the midlands

I belive that it runs and starts fine after the first start up of the day its just the first start up
I think that a good meter is needed to see whats happening but I'll pass on the info

James

Web site is only about 4 years out of date!

I have not read the hole article in my motor boat mag but it has a long term result on a Etec 40 & they had problems starting dew to spark plugs!

Could be worth towing it down to OSM at Lostwithiel , they do seem to know the etecs very well .
As you say it sounds like it needs a good meter and someone who knows how to use it .

Or just pull start it for the first time
