I'm with you mate, even though its someone else property I'd still challenged them.

I hope I would too, though I guess I would only know for sure when I found myself in the situation.
Two big rotties would make the decision easier (still a brave thing to do though!).

Apart from shouting to deter people the last time I took action involved a BMW been drove at the offenders and the chasing them down the high street with a telescopic battern, had the desired affect.
