Engine oil leak

Evening everyone,

Finally managed to get back up to the lakes this weekend only to find that the storage cabin I use for the outboard etc had blown over and the outboard was lying on the wrong side with a fair bit of oil around. I have stood it back up and secured everything, including cleaning up the oil.

Do I just need to top the oil back up or does it need to be checked over first?

Thanks in advance.

Presumably this is a 4 Stroke?

Oil may well have found its way into the cylinder(s). It doesn't need an engineer - remove the plug(s) turnover by hand several times wiping away any oil that comes out the plug hole. Clean any oil off the plugs and refit.

Make sure the engine is dead level when you top up the oil - small engines are easy to overfill if you have them slightly tilted.

Start up - may take a little longer than usual, and will probably smoke like a 1970's 2 stroke for a while but should settle down.

Hi Poly, sorry should have said, yes it's a 4 stroke. Thanks for the advice. Will try that next time I go up.
