Engine Hours

Are engine hours calculated in real hours, i.e if I turn my engine on, and leave it ticking over, will it count as an extra hour on the engine for each actual hour I leave it running just the same as it would if I was blasting around at 40 knots, or is it based on the RPM or something?

My understanding is that its 'real' hours..

Definitely "real" hours - I was horrified when I took my Suzuki DF140 in for its first service to find this breakdown of engine RPM :-

0-1000 rpm, 564 min
1000-2000 RPM 248 min
2000-3000 RPM 188 min
3000-4000 RPM 248 min
4000-5000 RPM 140 min
5000-6000 RPM 38 min
ABOVE 6000 RPM, 4 min

Id spent 50% oif the 20 hours at tick over and another 25% just off tick over.

OK - so I didn't mind that much as I was running the engine in - but it made me think - and I switch her off if we are sat around doing nothing these days.

that is a scarey stat

i would love to see the stats for my honda 90, that would be interesting indeed. having spent a great deal of its life on the river.

hope me merc spits out data like your suz does

I would say most boats have the same stats. My engine was just serviced and whilst i didnt spend as long at tickover, i did at 1000 to 2000, probably due to the Chichester entrance to northney run (8knts), seems to take forever some days

Is there any way you can read the engine hours/rpm stats out off your engine yourself? Possible for Mercury ? I bought a second hand Tornado and love to check if the statments of the seller are correct concerning the engine.

I think the service people have these little hand held things that read off this info - i always ask for a printed copy, which they can easily do. I do this for exactly your reason e.g if i sell the boat there is a documented record.

I suppose you could ask the owner if he has such a printout or ask him to get one.

P.S these print outs are quite good , well my evinrude one is as it shows any faults or potential up and coming issues, e.g if the engine temp reading keep going up maybe there is a water cooling issue, it could be as simple as a blocked hole in the block with salt in it - that sort of thing

hi,
my opti only logged hours over 750 rpm so idle tickover was not recorded,
this meant that my boat engines showed 232hours after a year where we did considerably more, either that or my engine is wrong either way good news on servicing!

On my diesel, the engine hours counter is on the ignition - so if the ignition is on, the hours are counting up......even when not running!!

You just have to remember NOT to leave the ignition on for too long when playing with stuff...

Just had my Opti fault code read, and engine use downloaded, figures were very similar, as I have just bought her, was quite happy to see the figures! only .4 hours over 5000 rpm, most of the 64 hours done at around the 1500 and 3000 rpm area,s, as was rear at my works,shame a printer was not available !!but as these numbers were not cleared out, will print off next time !!
