Engine Hoist

I have a 25hp mercury on my 14 ft inflatable and need to remove the engine to install oarlocks (need to deflate the boat). I've always stored the boat inflated, on a trailer with the engine on it because the last time I lifted it I think I hurt myself (LOL). But seriously, I really don't want to take it off of the boat again and I don't have anyone that I can ask to help me. Is there such a thing as an engine hoist that I can attach to the ceiling of my garage or something. I really want to install those oarlocks but I really don't want to have to lift that engine.

Can you borrow a dinghy mainsheet and fix one end to the rafters? (ideally you want one with a locking mechanism).

If you have rafters, you could use a variation on Polwart's idea that won't need blocks or a cleat - Wind the jockey wheel on the trailer fully down, tie it up to the rafters making the support rope as tight as possible, unbolt the engine, and wind the jockey wheel on the trailer up. This will drop the transom out from under the engine - that way you only need to find a suitably strong bit of rope. If yourtrailer has no jockey wheel, stick a jack under the drawbar.

Alternatively if you don't have a handy rafter, you could be creative with a wooden frame to catch / hold it or a load of padding (e.g old carpet), a block of wood under the skeg, and lash it to a wall?

You could also use a ratchet strap in combination with above to ensure all the slack was taken out before moving the jockey wheel.

Your motor probably weighs around 50kgs so make sure that your garage roof beams are up to it before you use them for lifting as they may not be as big as the ones in your house!

If all is good then these are around £50 from machine mart UK. (you probably have a US equivalent).

Not for a vertical pull. Tirfirs are better for geting your broken down Landie out of the mud though!

50KG isn't much of a weight to lift. If you can't lift it yourself what about hiring a engine hoist like the one in the pic. Over here they are about £25 a day to hire.
