Box clever, sun, ali, steering and more celebratory cans of guiness....

When the sun comes out the work increases...
been super busy but sadly not on my E-rib project, but have now made some progress.

The missing link (connection box) has now arrived and is now safely mounted in the front of the console(see front and rear pic). There were many sleepless nights of deliberations, of where on the rib to locate it. But im now pleased with the result. The box is waterproof and will be hidden by the seat back.

I have also now bolted in the ali frames that will support the full 250kg of battery, when its assembled fully in the hull.

Next job....
Final high voltage connections
Bolt i3 battery down
Turn key
Sea trial

Hope the sun keeps shining Click image for larger version

Fag packet calculation for day out in a 6.5mtr boat.

100mls at 20kn = 5hrs running time

130Hp engine at 3500rpm...producing about 80hp = approx 60Kw

60Kw x 5Hrs = 300Kw hours

Lithium ion approx £150 per Kwh = £45,000
Weight approx 5KG per KWh = 1500Kg (400Kg over the max total capacity for the boat)

Custom made petrol tank.......£500
Fuelled for 100mls................80Kg

Why am I not buying into this.

Zodiac Nautic Group and Torqeedo introduce Avon eJET concept | Boating Industry

These tenders are equipped with an 80hp Deep Blue electric motor and the latest generation lithium battery from Torqeedo (32kWh, as used in the BMW i3). Based on the companyís early testing, the eJET will deliver a 90 minutes range in normal use. The tender achieves a max speed of 26 knots.

The future is now.

The companies said the eJET Concept performed strongly in testing both in performance and reliability, leading Avon and Torqeedo to further collaborate on a commercial range of eJETs that will be available for sale in 2019.

Now I’m intrigued.

26kn for 90mins giving a range of 40mls Hmmmm?

80Hp (60Kw) for 90mins would be 90 Kwh Three times the capacity of the battery.

So it can do 26kn…. it can run for 90mins…. but it can’t do both.
Even if it could, it’s not going to get you from Kyleakin to Canna and it certainly isn’t going to get you back.
No displacement figures but I’m guessing when it’s sitting on a trailer it's not going to be towed with any, currently available, electric car.
So this “future isn’t now” and it looks like what’s coming in 2019 ain’t going to cut the mustard either.
