Easiest 2 stroke engine to work on

Hi all,

Inspired by a conversation over the weekend, I've decided I should really learn to work on 2 stroke outboards rather than always taking my aging Mariner 90 to the mechanic. I live in London but our boat is in Wales so I can't really learn on the 90s. I was thinking of buying a smaller outboard to learn and work on here in the garage - can anyone recommend one that would serve this purpose? Ideally something similar to the Mariner 90... but that has plenty of resources for someone with no experience of these things!

Thanks for any advice.

Jim

Hi Jim. I would suggest you give Uncle Al on here a pm for info as he was a longtime MARINER engineer with Barrus uk

I'd suggest an engine identical to the ones you already have. You can then use this as a source of spares & for testing purposes

I had a Tohatsu 70C and found that this engine was nice and really simple, but I agree with pikey dave to feel your way round your own engine is the best way to learn, especially when you have any challenges in the future.
Its also good to print out a parts listing of your engine, help you get your head round the layout.
