Sent them another mail so will see what they come back with - ideally need the correct batteries in by Friday so I can test it in the tank, before my planned trip next weekend. Then look at the ignition switch so I can test it over a few days on the water.

Put new batteries in yesterday, and some problems seem to have gone away.

I ran the motor for 15 mins in the tank, and didn't get the alarm but monitoring the voltage in EV Diag it's about the 55v mark, but with everything on (spots, cd, VHF, trim, hds x2) this drops down to 30ish

I looked under the flywheel and I can see spaces where I guess magnets should be, and it sounds like it's rubbing. Has anyone pulled the flywheel off at home? Do I need a puller? I want to try and remove anything that stuck - so it wont cause any more damage.

I have put a video up on you tube (hope it works) - http://youtu.be/2-cDuAvIGP4

So today I took the flywheel off to inspect the magnets. Attached are some photos

I had 10 that had fallen off - they were still stuck on the flywheel but only by the power of the magnet and they had slipped quite a bit.

Most had the chrome covering peeling - and that's what was causing the scraping noise.

I have re stuck them into place to try and get out next weekend but now it's running really rough and alarms after about. 30 seconds, won't rev before the alarm and very lumpy, vibrates the whole boat - so looks like I've made it a whole lot worse!

You've thrown the balance of the flywheel out. Running it like that will feck the engine completely. You need to get the flywheel (professionally) sorted. I would suggest having the engine away to a dealer for a proper looking at before you make things worse.

Yeah guessed it's the balance, and it's only ran for about a min if that, and didn't go about about 1000 RPM - just annoyed it such a rubbish design, the more I read the more I hear about the amount of people getting the same fault.

I would of expected the slipping magnets to have thrown it out of balance, but looks like the magnets with no chrome Vs ones with Vs the 10 that have been repositioned is enough to unbalance the apple cart..

Don't think I can go down the dealer route though unfortunately - I need the boat fixed for the weekend and doubt anyone will have the space, and I will struggle to take it over. It's stripped back down now so surly it will be a case of putting on the replacement connecting it all back up and connecting up the computer to see the voltages back to normal.

This was mine. Looks slightly different (250)

Get the part on order ASAP - as I said it had to come from US.

New design is better...iirc.

Aries - Did you get your timing checked? Do you know if it needed adjusting?

Hi Steve,

I followed your thread as I am in the process of ordering a brand spanking 175, and have done some research into what is available.

I really hope you manage to get things sorted, and it runs well in the end.

I read your earlier comments with regards to the gauges, and as far as I know at the moment all that is available with the engines now are the ICON pro gauges, which come as standard. Apparently these are an improvement over the I command gauges, and are pretty much plug and play. They apparently plug into your NMEA 2000 network, and then if you want additional dedicated gauges such as water pressure, fuel etc, they just piggy back into the RPM master gauge. Aslo they can accept analogue inputs from oil tanks, fuel tanks etc.

Probably not what is on your mind right now, but just thought I would mention it if you want to do the research.

Good luck with the repairs........

Tonto

Hi Tonto, Yeah I want to eventually add a water pressure sensor, but other than that I cant see what I would like - as the HDS shows so much information its brilliant.

Other than that these new issues I love the motor.

Just spoken to Liverpool Power Boats - and they can get me one tomorrow

No idea - Paul (south coast marine) sorted it all for me...so probably. It has been serviced as well, so I guess everything has been done...including that new injector I mentioned a few pages back.

Steve, not sure you can put all these issues onto the flywheel although clearly it needs sorting as a starting point.

Good luck with the new one and whilst I hope it solves your issues I not sure its the only culprit.

Looking at the corrosion under the flywheel have you identifies why this has happened, generally it means there is a water leak of some description.

I am hoping it's down to batteries, key switch, and flywheel.

# New batteries went in last weekend and this helped with some issues (no more voltage drop to 8V when starting)

# Collect new key switch tomorrow and hopefully this will iron out the final starting issues.

# Collect new fly wheel tomorrow so hopefully this will stop my low voltage alarm, and hopefully stop the trim problem when at WOT as I hope this is down to the low voltage.

Tomorrow is the day when it all comes together, I have a water test booked as well as running it in a tank isn't helping - it needs a good run at WOT to burn off all the old oil from winterisation.

Tomorrow night i will either be posting to say it's all worked and so much better, or I will be posting saying etec for sale!

Fingers crossed for you Steve don't forget to look for the source of the corrosion on the flywheel.... !

Ok to update this post.....

I was at Liverpool power boats at 8:30 this morning waiting for them to open so I could get my goodies...

Was back home by 10:30 with the new flywheel and ignition switch, both stripped down and swapped over by 12:00. Launched by 12:30 and started her up........

Firstly, no erratic stating when I wiggle the key - so new ignition switch has fixed that fault

And motor runs quiet and smooth, and no alarms - so that fault has been fixed.

I did a few runs at WOT and no trim problems, so that fault has now been fixed.

So back to 100%.

I did ask about the timing, and was told the new flywheel won't need timing adjustment, out of all the ones they have done timing has never been an issue.

Great news !
Do you have any clue what caused the corrosion ?
Did you find any water leaks under the cowl ?
