E-tec 300 vs H.O.

I'm looking to buy a new motor for my boat. I've testeted the Suzuki 300 and like it. But I would like to hear any view on E-tec 300 and if anyone tested the 250 High Output. The little I've read gets good press but I don't know the differences. Any help in my decision making is appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
matt

All HO's are for light weight boats and high speed. The gearcase is diferent and more fragile than normal.
If you're looking for something in the region of 300 I would suggest an E-tec 300 or the Suz 300. Not a 250 HO.

Have a look at the Mercury 300XS as well - it's a race engine but usable every day - very light weight and a 2 stroke using Optimax technology.

Ok, Thanks. I'm looking for durability so the HO is out then from my needs. Then we're down to E-tec or Suz 300...

Thanks

I'm not sure about either of the above.

The HO gives approx 45 more hp for the same weight as a 250 and comes in leary stars and stripes.

I tossed-up between a DF and an Etec, the dealer, Ian at Liverpool Powerboats advised to go for the Etec. He sold both, so he was getting my dough either way.
The Etec out performs the DF in all depts other than noise at tickover.

No contest, just look at the weight difference for a start.

I know, but it's nice to get rid of 15 kg of oil tank, hoses and stuff as well. I guess I'm down to price really, I've had 3 new Suz (140-300 hp) and they all been great, but i must say the new E-tec seems like a good choice as well. It needs to be in place at transom in March.

Matt
Would you position the tank etc over the transom?

I am not - I want MORE power - a 400hp would be great but as they aren't available I will have to settle for a 350hp Verado. With the sudden collapse of the £ it will have to wait a while though - it is almost double the price I was hoping to pay!!!

More power ??? why?
We manage 60+ knots with ours and that is only for very short spurts!
Try the Verado over the 2 stroke its fantastic!

No, so true. My boat has a definite max at 300 hp so that'll do it for me. I'm in Sweden so the sterling has gone the right way for me .

I WANT a 40ft Fairline, the £ can go up, down and dance around, but I still wont be able to afford one.

Have you thought about trading in the Crownline?

My boat is quite a bit heavier than yours - I think I will need 350hp to break the 60 barrier - 60mph would be great but if I can hit 60kts I will be in heaven - hopefully not at the same time............

The main reason I want a bigger engine is for fuel economy - less time spent at WOT.

So, with these savings, what would be the payback period on the additional outlay of a new motor?

It won't - what it will really mean is that my economical cruising speed will rise from 25kts to 40kts for about the same fuel usage - I hope!!!

Is the 'new engine' going to be a long drawn out saga with no forseeable end?
