Why hasn't it hurt Ford's or VWs then???

codprawn you do talk out your ass. The government could barely organise a pick nick.

Silicone is known to damage zirconium HEGO sensors. They probably transported the petrol in a diesel tank without washing it properly (i'm pretty sure silicone is used in diesel as an anti-foaming agent) or something along those lines.

The news report I saw said that silicone damaged heated oxygen sensors and also said that it is, as you say, the anti foaming agent in diesel. Can't immediately understand what the reaction is that causes damage though.

Go and buy an old carbed V8 Land Rover - there should be lots of cheap petrol around and by burning it (thereby saving burning other fuel) rather than dumping it you are being environmentally friendly

But why didn't it cause problems for VW or Ford cars? Surely they use HEGO sensorsl? SiO2 would cause problems for them as well.

It could be any number of reasons cod. Maybe Bosch sensors are more prone to damage than Denso or Fords Motorcraft sensors for example.

If you actually read or listened to the news stories you'd know that there have been suspected cases with most car manufactures, its just affecting specific manufactures more.

Not sure if it's related but one of the bike forums was reporting a significantly higher than average amount of 2-stroke seizures.

Due to a over abuse of alchole last night and this evening me memory disappeared. the sensors in question are called lambda's. Me mate runs a garage and they have been changing these for a few weeks now. unfortunatly one of the cocky mechanics who is even cocker now said 2 weeks ago it was silicone that was doing the damage. ( bloody good guess i suspect ) You cannot clean them, it has been tried only replacements.

But as i say i know nothing.

The price is going up because they are having to dump a load of fuel and re-supply quickly. This will have some effect on the short-term market. The oil & petrol commodity traders will take advantage and push the market price up. So not the retailers or even distributors (although of course they may still take a slice!).

What happens to the contaminated fuel? Presume it must have some use to someone?

Make you mind up Biggles! One minute you're agreeing with Codprawn that the contamination story was a "whitewash" and that it was obviously a problem with the ethanol addative. Now you decide that it's "obviously" contamination from the diesel tank!
