Surely Not

Here

tell me you guys are not really and honestly considering in all manner of being totally stupid the option of fitting fins to a 240 HP + outdrive leg --- fins that people are putting on 25hp outboards on the back of an orkney strikeliner that weighs 250kg???

if you want to spend your money put in something that works - - the lifeboat -- get a grip guys??

Pete

Pete,

now this might surprise you...

I've got these fin thingys fitted to Blue Ice. Not through choice, as they were fitted before I got the boat. So of course I've no idea what they do for the handling. All up cruising weight in the region of 1400 to 1500kg.

Maybe one day I'll take them off and see what the difference is?

Also, last night I was looking through the bills and receipts, found that the fins were purchased from Steel Developments (the propeller people). I wonder if they were a recommendation?

The distributor for Doel Fins is Mark Dowland Marine tel:01929 551138 or mdm@unipart.co.uk. Or as they used to say: The answer is yes, now what is the question?

Surely Not!

Pete,
I had the same concerns about the Doel-fins being fitted to such large engines and boats. Also told the owner that I thought it was a stupid idea!
However I was proven wrong, actually very bloody wrong!

Doel Fins

Well after much reading and wondering I fitted a set to my Redbay 7.4(165Hp diesel inboard) on Saturday. The reason was that it is a shite to get onto the plane as you have to get to about 1500rpm before the turbo kicks in, after that its no prob. Getting to 1500rpm can be a big pain in the arse, dosent matter how you trim her you have to go WoT and turn from side to side, then 1500rpm and whey hey.
So I thought well what the hell, lifted the boat on Friday night and fitted a set on Saturday. I couldnt get actual Doel Fins locally so fitted a set of Lazarus?? Hydros at the pricey sum of £22.50.
Launched again on Saturday night and immediatly noticed a difference, quicker to get up to 1500rpm and much much better on the trim.
I can now actually trim her the way I think you should be able to i.e bow up/down depending on conditions.
I have yet to try her in a rough sea to see if there is any difference but up to now they have worked for me

I was also out on a Carson 7m fitted with a 300hp Volvo Kad42, what a boat

Andy
