Redbay have given me til christmas to decide on the engine, so i've got some time to wait and see what develops (and who develops it!). Redbay don't have the KAD300 on offer for the twin test they have arranged, but a KAD44. Still it should be interesting....

It ain't over yet. Just one more thing. Redbay are recommending that should i go with the Yanmar that i should fit the bravo 2X legs as they are stronger and bravo 3x owners are known as "the broken leg club". Do you agree? Is bravo 2 a good choice?

Believe me this whole engine thing is boring me as much as it is you. Hopefully it'll all be sorted out soon. Thanks to everyone for their help.

BTW: JW, where do you do most of your boating?

I hv made enquiries at Marine Power in Belgium and hv been told that for this application for sure Bravo 2 legs are not suitable. Bravo 2 are best for heavier boats, ie; heavier application ,
Bravo 2 has a longer leg and is much lower in the water

Bravo 1 or Bravo 3 would be more suitable

Bravo 2's were designed for the "cruiser" market, and swing a much larger diameter prop. Bravo 1 is more performance orientated, a Bravo 3 sounds like the drive for you, all these mentioned are of course X's if being used with diesels.

I'm east coast based so most, day to day, boating is local, Firth of Forth, Dunbar, Isle of May, St Andrews. Nothing too taxing. Most of the time, short, bumpy and uncomfortable.
Other times it's west coast and mainly the Outer Islands.

So with our intrepid hero unable to afford ("cos he only has 3 other second hand ribs" source CH) the latest Canadian Aliminium icebreaking rib he sets to work on a major project and overhaul during the winter months of the latest addition to the fleet.

Hopefully he has a better understanding of Project Management than some others who regularly post on here (despite not actually owning a rib) and will therefore have the boat in the water by early spring.

Work in hand, engine overhaul, fuel tank replacement and the dreaded MCA coding.

Of course with the jet who cares about stern drive problems and the cat yes please.

Use it as a cleaning agent, brilliant stuff. You must have seen what it does to copper coins. Not sure what it does to Stuuarts insides though,

Coca cola is a lot cheaper when there is a 2 fo 1, offer at this moment you can buy three botles for £3 at sainsbury's which works out at 73.29% cheaper than Jizer.

I never realised that Jasper was such a lump, there ain't many people make that engine look small ish

Hate to drag this back up, but i'm going to anyway . Redbay say the Volvo D6 might fit afterall, but at 750kg (about 200 more than the KAD300) is it worth it. It chucks out 300 Horsepower at the prop (Kad300 manages 272). Basically, ignoring all the other benefits (and disadvantages) of a common rail diesel, is this extra 25-30 HP enough to shove the extra 200kg? And what effect will torque play, bearing in mind the D6 produces considerably more than the KAD300?

Thanks in advance for your help and again sorry for bringing it back up, but it's an important decision and i intend to get it right.

Talking to Allan Priddy last night, he sais the new Volvos look good but unproven.... I wouls tend to agree... Good look, and We might meet up at the RIB RAID in Bangor NI next July/Aug

I dunno if this is the right way to think about it, but, using your figures......
A KAD300 at 550kg and producing 272hp has to push 2.02kg for each hp it produces.
A Volvo D6 at 750kg and producing 300hp has to push 2.5kg for each hp.
Therefore, dot-dot-dot, you are nearly 20 percent worse off with the Volvo.
or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Two good points but what effect will the vastly superior torque have? I've also got to consider that the D6 is quieter, more frugal and way more refined than the KAD300. I think based on this the D6 will be the way to go (if they can make it fit).

On the boat front, redbay have got my tubes and fuel tank in, so it's starting. Can't wait!

I haven't rejected the Yanmar yet, i'm just using the KAD300 as comparison with the D6 to keep things simple. I'll decide between KAD300 and yanmar at a special comparison test redbay are arranging for me.
