Best place for a starter motor

Alright floks

Andy (my brother) and I were out in the Rib today, Launched at Renfrew Ferry then I took the boat up to Braehead to the pontoons to wait for him as he was taking the trailer up the raod. Anyways Andy returns, starts the boat and we get halfway between braehead and Renfrew and we hear this screaming noise like a belt slipping accompanied with smoke pishing out the engine cover.....turns out the starter motor for reasons best known to itself re engaged and burnt it self out...Arrgghhhh
Got the boat alongside and had to wait for 5 hrs for the tide to be right for recovering the rib, using a 4hp outdoor motor!!!!.

Anyways back on topic, I was wondering if anyone knew the best place to get the starter refurbed or replaced (made a few phonecalls today and everyone shut)

From what I can see starter is

Type no 6115A24-22
Des no 1327A611

It does have Lucas stamped on it but the Lucas website is worse than useless and the local Lucas agents have either moved or closed (Glasgow) and cant find any info on the Lucas agents via google.

So far I have only come up with one supplier via google wich is http://www.prestolite.com/pgs_produc...tarter%20Motor
and they state that the availability in europe is Priority / status of very low (D) whatever that means

Will be phoning mermaid on Monday as the engine is a 200hp mermaid turbo 4, ps the starter is 24v with a 10 tooth pinion (even though that other site states that it has a 12 tooth pinion) and it does not have the tapered nose either as the pinion is totaly uncovered unlike the photos on the prestolite website (though everything else looks the same)

Thanks in advance

Graeme

I'd personally not bother with a Prestoshite starter, if the ones they make for Land Rovers are anything to go by, you'd be better off with a starting handle!!

There used to be a place here
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x...ay=669351&lm=0

Only thing is it's been a while since I killed a starter, so don't know if they are still in business. And right now I can't remember their name......

Hope that gives you a start. if not I'll see if I can figure out if they're still there or not.

Other option although not maybe too local for you is AA Components in Bridge of Allan.

Aye Lucas have been out the game for a year now, which is a PITA as they did all my bosch injection pump work too .. seems Dingbro have taken all their work

For starter motors I've been using these guys www.nippon-dis.co.uk and they are brill, next day service, but they tend to specialise in Jap stuff, but if they cant do it they'll have a recon agent who can I'm sure ...very reaonable prices 2 litre 4 cyl expect around £155 recon, vs £389 dealer and when you get the unit all gears and finish are as new

Isn't the Mermaid derived from a lorry engine? If so, you may get some luck with a lorry breaker.

Cheers for the replys folks.

Phoned Mermaid this morning and they wanted £480+Vat + postage for a starter !!!!!

Andy popped into Stanley Harris this morning and they pointed him in the direction of a local company in Glasgow (cant remember the name)
They had a look at it and the armature is burnt out, they are quoting approx £250ish to refurbish the starter

The base engine for the Turbo 4 is a Ford Dover engine that was used is some of the old Ford Cargo units, so if they were 24V as well this might be a good avenue to persue to source a spare.
http://www.mermaid-marine.co.uk/PDF/...TurboFour3.pdf but the starter looks nothing like the one in the picture in the PDF link, possibly as the engine was used as part of a millitary application therefor things getting beefed up

Will post the details of the company once I have spoken to my brother again

Cheers
Graeme
