Baystar Hyd Steering

Has anybody fitted Baystar hydraulic steering to a DF 90 Suzuki. I am not to worried about the central consul which seems straightforward (Famous last words) the fitment to the engine is what I am concerned about some parts have to be turned up side down (apparently) so that the engine will tilt any advise would be appreciated.

Hi, is it a front mount or side mount?
We fitted a front mount to a mercury on our old boat and did find the 'destructions' a bit misleading in the end we found it fitted without any adjustment.

The reason we went for side mont this time is the hoses dont move so less chance of something going wrong / wearing out. The down side is the steering is slightly more turns one way than the other however we dont really notice it.

When the cylinder arrives it will come with an instruction manual with a page dedicated to each different make/model of outboard. When you find the right page you should find it pretty straight forward.

It’s due to arrive tomorrow and as you say the instruction should be straightforward, I was just hopping some one had fitted one before and I could pick their brains.

Its pretty straight forward, difficult part is making sure the air is out the system which just takes patience, dont rush it.

I like the bit in the instructions that says ' before you try it your way try our way first .....'

Any problems just ask im sure one of us will have an answer

I'll be fiting the same steering to the same engine at weekend. Looking at the instruction manual it all looks fairly simple. You need to turn the pivot mount upside down by loosening one side of the ram, slipping off the mount, slipping it back on the other way up and tightening up the ram again.
Hopefully it will be as straightforward as it sounds....

I hope to fit mine on Friday if the weather lets me, if I discover any pitfalls I will let you know it looks like the bleeding is going to be the fun part, just hope there is enough juice in the kit

On another subject how do you upload pictures to your posts?

I have only managed to fit the barrel because of the weather. I found fitting the barrel with the pivot plate turned over a bit of struggle because there is not a lot of room to fit the bolt.

so what I did was fit the pivot plate with the half inch spacer on its own then attached the barrel once the bolt was done up. The bolt is a bit long so you may want to cut it to fit. It worked a treat just be careful when you tighten the cap screws as the metal they are made from is quite soft.

Tomorrow I hope to fit the rest.

I fitted mine today and found it V. easy. I unscrewed both cap screws, pulled the ram apart enough to pull the pivot plate free and flipped it around. Tightened both screws and bob was my uncle.
If you flip the pivot plate round you can fit the bolt, tighten and then flip back round. Then you fit the two "arms" and tighten the various nuts to fix them to the motor. Job took about 30mins start to finish from opening the box.
The only thing I found was that a spacer kit was required but since this isn't a part that actually turns (the pivot part is a SS part on the pivot plate) I popped in two large Penny SS washers of the correct size and used that as a spacer. If you don't the pivot plate is very close to the steering arm when turning. I also put a little threadlock on the pivot bolt to stop it working loose as it is fed in from the bottom.
This is how it looks now.
