Are selva outboards the same as yamaha

hello everyone Im looking at buying a new yamaha f40 efi tiiler and remembered a conversation a long time ago where someone said that selva outboards where rebadged yamaha's. Is this true as the selva outboards are about 30% cheaper then yamaha.

I know some of the smaller engines more or less have different hoods and price tags.

Yamaha have a large stake in Selva and Selva’s 4 stroke outboards are actually Yamaha models with a ‘Selva’ cowl (and a lower price!). If the Selva badge bothers you, you could always buy the Selva engine and a replacement cowl from Yamaha ...But then you might not be making much of a saving.

Yamaha decals instead of hood.

If Yamaha are anything like Tohatsu - then you'll need the serial number - as it's a special order part from a main dealer. Also quite expensive, for decals. I ended up sourcing a shop-soiled cowl which I machine polished. Now I have the original cowl and a set of genuine Tohatsu decals! Will sell later this year. Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Of the Selva 4T range the 4 h.p., one engine in the 8 and 9.9 h.p. range and all engines 15 h.p. and above are Yamaha with just a diffent colour and Selva badged hood.
