I have a slightly newer 50hp Mariner (same thing) and gutless is not quite how I'd describe it - ridiculously quick would be more accurate, and that's coming from someone who's riden sports bikes for the last 18 years!!

Granted mine's slightly newer but I don't think you'll find a 50hp Merc gutless on a SR4

Is it the one that's just sold on ebay for £1600 odd?

JSP - normally I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone who buys something on ebay then gets jumpy afterwards. But he has lied (exagerated) about the age of the engine and that in itself means you can walkaway without any reasonable complaint from the seller.

I think you were bidding againt Retrorib's brother then

Unless you are his brother

That Merc is the clamshell model which I'm told is not as good as the model I have (Nos, your thoughts?) but as long as it runs ok I'm sure it won't be a bad motor. Rest of the boat looks alright.

Getting quite in to this ebay boat buying aren't you, ah well, 3rd time lucky eh?!

If this one's no good, next time, go take a looksee at the boat before you buy it, and better still take someone along what knows his stuff

Sorry Retrorib's brother

Buying boats on ebay isn't the best way I know. I've got my dad doing cart wheels in temper about it Keeps his ald ticker going though. But there seems no where else to buy for my price range. As every flaming Rib in the country seems to be on the south coast, going to see is very hard to do. So chances I'll have to take.

RIBase
Well...the clamshells won't be as good as the later ones with a proper cowl-they are older for a start-but if it's running OK, it's still a 50hp with PTT, not particularly heavy and it should go rather well... I'd keep it as long as it's OK then upgrade when it starts to be a pain.

Just like to point out that this is the only one I have gone back on. The first one I bid on decided he wanted more money and we argued the toss about it for a week. Then there was this Humber and now I'm picking up the searider tomorrow. You make me sound like I'm bidding willy nilly on boats with no intention of buying

I wouldn't dream of suggesting such a thing

No, but seriously there are such a large proportion of boats sold on ebay that are "re-advertised due to time wasters" it amazes me. As a regular ebay user I would be really peaved if someone bid on my auction, won the item then went back on the agreement.

HOWEVER, in a case where the seller has apparently lied or exaggerated regarding important details then I think you have a good reason to back out.

There is a chance that HE may have been wrongly advised about the age which would mean although he hasn't purposely lied to you, he has provided you with incorrect information which, when it comes down to it is the bottom line.

I don't think for one minute he lied, just had the facts wrong. I'm going to pass on the info in this thread but don't know how it will be received.
