Already looking for another motor

As our 4HP motor we bought is a little underpowered - not able to get our 3-metre SIB up to top river speed, topping out at 5mph - we are looking at getting a bigger one already.
I have found this one on eBay:
EVINRUDE 9.9HP SHORT SHAFT OUTBOARD
Old, but seems in good nick.
Any thoughts?

"Get a large rib up on the plane" too funny for further comment! 😂

You can get a much better engine for £600, I wouldn't even pay £200 for that

We are definately going to upgrade to a bigger one at some point in the near future.

We've been looking for the last few weeks but have not found anything above 9HP for less than £1000.
We are also going to keep any eye on this auction: MARINER 10 HP 2 STROKE OUTBOARD ENGINE (NO RESERVE) | eBay
Any thoughts on this one?

Personally I wouldn't buy any secondhand engine unless I could see it in the flesh & running. Caveat emptor

Don't be hasty this one http://www.rib.net/forum/showthread.php?t=75302 came up a while back, it took me 4-6 weeks daily search to find my first 15hp £500.00 scruffy and no history on that just a dealers 3 month warranty

Mercury/Marina/Yamaha seem to have the best reputation if you are going to be impulsive again 😊

If you like the look of an eBay outboard then approach the seller and ask the questions about service, ownership and ask would they mind an inspection, possible pressure test and to see it started from cold and running. You might be a pain to some but it might find you a genuine owners with a cared for outboard

What is your SIB rated up to? We started with a 4hp on our 3.4m RIB and upgraded to a Tohatsu 18hp (which I was told by a Mercury dealer is identical to the Mercury 15hp in all respects).

Having the extra up and go (and getting onto plane so easily) made for a much more enjoyable experience).

The motor was very old and looked terrible but never let us down. It had been serviced.

KH I think you need to look very hard before you leap (again) which should be the feeling from other posts above.

That Suzuki you bought is only 3yrs old and had never been run so have you got it fully run in yet (10hrs) to know it is up to its best performance?

In truth it ought to make top river speed if that is about 6mph. Are you sure the boat/keel are fully inflated checked with a pressure gauge... also I assume you are not taking out loads of folks? In case of any performance issue you need a £15 Ebay rev counter to see if the engine is reaching its maximum, perhaps you have an unsuitable prop pitch.

If you are sticking to rivers I'd keep with the 4hp and get it working to its best. If you are going to venture to salt water then have a good think and "invest" in a nice condition motor as near to 2006 as you can if you are sticking to used 2-strokes. One important point... with the 10hp motors you have mentioned the 10hp & 15hp are the same motor just with tuning/carb differences... so you might as well wait for a 15hp as there's little point carrying the weight of a 15hp for just 10hp.

AS a rule when looking for a used motor I'd far rather buy from a genuine private seller who has owned the motor for a while and knows how it's been used and cared for... rather than like the Evinrude someone who is obviously breaking motors for spares and doing the odd one up for profit.... they have likely only run them in a bucket and don't know how they go on a boat.

I was holding off on advising on that as I don't know enough on that year, I think under the hood it's the same as the later models? Forward/reverse on side of lump?

This series was a strong contender when I was on the hunt, with little use it sounds ideal - get in touch!

I've had great service from the 20/25hp Mariners of that era... with a known history and from a member on here it has to be worth a punt.

I was going to post exactly the same as above - grab Nugent's Mariner 15 in a flash.

Oh damn... well in that case seek out the best 2000-2006 year Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke you can find.

We've definitely learned our lesson on motors -mostly. We didn't get to see the 4hp running but it had never gotten its toes wet so we risked it.

We'll be going to view and see it running before committing.

It's just the 2 of us on the water but we are heavy - read FAT, 250 kg between us - plus deck chair and rest of luggage.

I certainly believe it's the right pressure - we use a pump with a gauge and an auto cut off when it gets to right pressure.

We have now been out for 10 hours and have tried to run it in right.
I'll speak to OH about the rev counter.

TBH I'd lose the 3m SIB and get a 3.4m rated to 15 or more.

And buy that engine. You might lose a bit on the boat but swings and roundabouts - and a 3.4 with 15 will be *much* better suited given your load.

I've just looked and as well as a 10hp limit the transom is only rated to 28kg which means pretty well every old 10hp 2-stroke is too heavy as they are usually nearer 35kg... but the aforementioned Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke is within limits at 26kg.

See here at the bottom assuming yours is the one on the left... Europa Sport Aluminium Deck Inflatable Boats, 3m, 3.8m, 5.5m, 6m Heavy Duty Inflatable Boats

Edit... actually Max's advice is sound. If that 15hp engine on here suited you it would cost you half that of a decent Tohatsu 9.8 then that "saving" could cover the SIB upgrade.

Buy Nugent's 15hp. You'll need to be quick though at that price.

Then buy another SIB that's rated to take that size of motor.

Then sell your existing setup while the weather's still nice.

Or keep looking for a 10hp, which will cost you more when you do find one. Then next year, when you realise it's still not what you want, buy a new SIB and a 15hp motor, all the while kicking yourself for not doing it sooner

Would it be better to sell boat and motor together or separately?
