Age Help Please

I am thinkinking of buying an old RIB to get me back on the water. She has a Mariner 40 ML on the back - a 2 stroke that has to be pre mixed inthe fuel tank. The engine looks OK, starts easily and runs OK - bit loud but that is out of the water. Can anyone help me with a few queries as the current owner has no ideas:

1. Does this engine have a 12v output for VHF etc

2. There is a plate missing from the front of the engine cover. It is
to the right hand side as you look at the engine front, and about
4 or 5 inches by 2 inches. Will this hurt and why do they put
a removable cover here?

3. Age of the engine - the serial number is 6F9 - 360402

The boat is a Tornado 5m - serial number is 4012.

All help and advice gratefully received

Thanks

Graeme

Hola

Better send pics of the engine cowl & left & right interior engine side to see if it's an old, or current production model to have a look.

Graeme,

I suspect jyaski might be right, my old Suz had a plate that covered up the tiller mount hole.

As for the engine year, I suspect you have a 1993 vintage machine, but are you certain the "6F9" isn't a "6E9"?
http://www.marinshopen.se/Hj%C3%A4lp...4/Default.aspx
hints from the chassis number it's a '93, but that would imply a 6E9, which also kind of agrees with the Ishop marine Microfiche......

If it's manual start it's more likely not to have an alternator, BUT, going by my best guess, the Ishop microfiche seems to hint it's an option on that engine.

Engine certainly looks clean and cared for.

Thanks All. The hole I am talking about is in the engine cover - seems a little too high for a tiller control? Axs for the serialnumber - could well be a E rather than an F - is hard to read.

It is manual start - a hard pull - so no idea if option taken for power

Hi

The engine certainly looks clean and tidy. My one additional bit of advice would be to check the compression, each cylinder should be within 10% of each other although the actually figure is not that important about 100psi and it should be ok.
As for the boat I have a 1998 5m Tornado, which is an excellent small sea boat, mine has a 60hp 2stroke, which means it feels lively and has a reasonable amount of power. I personally wouldn't like less, as in the rough it certainly keeps the bow up. Looked after the boats are very good and if you can keep the sun off them they retain their colour well. , is yours a 5.1m or the later 5m? I think the 5s are a deeper v hull and give a better rough water ride. My dive club has a 5.5 from 1992 and it still looks great. I have used mine all over the country from the west coast of scotland to Portland, in some quite demanding seas and never felt concerned for my safety. They are also easy to tow and launch behind a standard car given a half decent slip and mine just! fits into a single garage by letting the tubes down a bit. They are also legal on an unbraked trailer.

Hope that helps
