A real headscratcher to me !

Hi experts,

could someone please offer some advice to a complete novice here ?

I have a Yamaha 28 electric start outboard. I have wired in a new ignition switch as there was none when I acquired it.

The engine starts easily on the starter or the pull cord, but I cannot STOP it !
There were only 3 wires coming from the top of the engine that I could see (apart from the battery cables), these were red, black and white.
The red and black I connected through the starter switch and that works fine.
I ASSUMED the white wire was for the engine STOP, so I wired it into a lanyard switch and back to earth.
Nothing happens in either position of the lanyard OR when I turn off ignition.
Does anyone (NOS maybe) know how else I can wire a stop switch or button as the wires don't appear to be there ?

Regards, Andy
