91 2 stroke 60hp Merc VS new 4 stroke 50hp Bigfoot merc

Ok so Looking into getting a new motor I currently run the 91, 60hp. For what I do with it, it works well but has trouble in the rapids getting the RPMs up.

My boat is technically rated for a 50 hp, so I want to put the proper rated HP on the boat but I don't want to lose to much power. I am hopping by going to the BIG FOOT I can get those higher mid and low range RPMs.

Loosing top end doesn't bother me I just need to be able to push weight in fast water.

so Will the 50hp 4 stroke big foot hold up against the old 91 60hp 2 stroke?

I have no experience with 4 strokes and need this motor in the next month an a half!!!! Please advice and opinions would be great.

Thanks guys!

If you really want to shove a lot of power down fast at low revs, look for a late Yam 2 stroke 50 with the big prop. It'll be a far better motor than the merc 4 stroke.

YOUR THE MAN! Thanks for this..........will be trying to get it........and is this an over all consensus on here that the YAMMY 2 stroke high thrust will beat the 4 Stroke Merc Big foot??

I'd get the yam for what you describe you want it for personally.

I doubt instant power between the yam and big foot will be close, I'd expect the yam to spank it.

One again Spartacus finds an engine, guy has engine hunting skills of a Jedi!

Cheers

@ Spartucus.....just a odd coincidence but my last name is Leslie hence the GripFast (its the Leslie clans moto) and the Leslie's originated in Aberdeenshire.......still think there is a Leslie Castle there. Seems like you sending me this link might be a wonderful thing of FATE.

Having watched Gibbo500 (one of our members) doing propstands in a 4m boat from a standstill with one of those Yamaha 50s, and the boat still making 35kts+, I think it's the perfect motor for you.

Interesting. That castle is a short distance from me.

Apparently your 'grip fast' motto came from a Hungarian nobleman (called Bartolf) who came to Scotland in 1067. It is said that Bartolf helped the queen across a dangerous river on a horse and that Bartolf told her to "grip fast", which is where the chief's motto comes from. Just as well he didn't say anything else!

Interesting link here for the castle. Use links to right to view various comments about the build. Pictures are from 2007.

Good luck with the engine. The Yammie units are bullet-proof if we'll maintained, easy to service and tune.

When thinking about four strokes I would forget Mercury...I just watched a Russian video on youtube where an ETEC 60hp 2 stroke was pitted against a Suzuki DF50 four stroke...The Suzuki won!
