90HP Mercury 2 stroke

Really sorry if this seems like a daft question. I have just upgraded to a Mercury 90HP 2 Stroke outboard, problem is I cannot seem to find a 2 stroke level indicator, when I open the flap on the top of the hood all I can see is a white plastic section which is for filling/ topping up.

On a seperate note the previous owner explained that the engine had an over sensitive oil level alarm, can this be replaced. I have read that there is sometimes a magnet on the bottom of the float arm that may be missing/ dislodged....

Any advice would be much appreciated.

How to check the oil level - take the cowl off and look at the tank.

Sensitive oil level sensor - they all are. Just keep the tank filled and it wont be sensitive. Also keep an eye on the seal at the top of the tank as it can dry and lead to leaking when it is tilted.

Do you mean that when I open the cowl I should see a "puddle" of oil? Does this also mean that there is no actual level indicator?

The tank for the 2 stoke oil on the side of the engine is semi-transparent so you can see the level of oil in the tank. Keep it at least 1/3 full and store a bottle onboard under a seat or something just in case. (See picture)

There is a low oil level alarm that can go off if your in the rough stuff as the oil starts sloshing around in the tank. This is probably why the vendor say's it is sensitive. As stated to combat this, keep the tank full and you won't have a sensitive oil level alarm anymore!

When you remove the cowl, you should be seeing something like this

so Mark I Eyeball is your actual gauge. The level indicator you refer to is more likely a "Low Warning" alarm. Best not test/rely on this. Keep her maxed on oil. The last owner probably meant that the alarm tended to go off prematurely - on say a half tank instead of a quarter. A lot of these systems do that. Unless it forces you into a "limp home" mode, it's not a big deal. I used to check oil levels after every tank full of fuel - that kept me right...

On a completely different note I purchased a mariner 90 2 stroke from this forum and am just getting around to fit it to my rib... Mine is a 1998 model
I have two favours i'd love to ask...
Firstly any chance you could you take a photo of where the thick wires that go from the battery to the outboard connect to
Secondly, could I get a photo of the wires by the tilt switch on the casing of the outboard. I disconnected them all and now am not sure if I have them correctly reconnected
Big ask but I would be totally thankful and owe you a pint when you pass by!

Your indicator of low oil levels should be an audible beeping sound through your control box, however that assumes its wired up and working correctly so the visual check is a sensible idea also, checking the basics whilst you have the hood removed.

Just curious. I have an outboard mercury engine on my boat, I think it's from 1995, 75 HP. The oil reservoir looks almost identical. I was curious, it was worked on in the shop this year, and I think they might have missed something. There is the main fill location with the screw off cap and seal, and then a smaller hole (can be seen in your picture) back from that toward the prop side of the engine. Is that supposed to have a cover or plug in it? I noticed with a full oil reservoir and engine tilt I am leaking oil. Is that a vent meant to be open? Or did the shop misplace the cap? Or perhaps I just put too much oil in the boat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, there should be a small black cap with a breather on it in that hole.

declan the oil tank breather is supposed to have a small rubber valve, to stop the oil leaking out at full tilt up, if the oil tank is full. either replace the breather, dont tilt so much or dont fill the oil tank up so much.
