Interesting thread.
Before the end of the month I will have re-engined my Gemini.
Cost is the over-riding factor for me. I just dont have pots of cash
to throw at this. My choices are therefore all sub 6500 new.
I have found the Tohatsu 90 - (about 900 under my budget figure),
an Etec 90 (100 under my budget) and an Optimax 90 (300 under my budget). The quotes I had are all good until the end of the month.
Previously I have had Yam 2 strokes on my smaller rib and my sib.
The wallet says go for the Tohatsu 90. As someone that is not out on the boat every weekend, maybe once a month - as work allows, I am not sure long service intervals on the Etec would benefit me.
However, I think the weight of the Etec means slapping an aux on the transom and it all still weighing less than a 4 stroke is a plus factor.
Again - would love to hear peoples experiences of the Tohatsu motor v the Etec.
If anyone knows of a new Four Stroke 90 or 100 that would fit within my budget I would be interested.
I even looked at importing a motor from the USA where I work quite often.
I found a brand new Yam 90 2 stroke boxed, at a dealer in Carolina
for US$4450 - not sure if I have to be a commercial fisherman to import it though!
