70-90hp How much??

After a recent disappointment I am sending my energy elsewhere. The 4m searider I was meant to be picking up has fallen through. All seems a bit dodgy. First time I call him I tell him my email for some pics, don't receive any. I then sent him a text with my email, called him and he said he had been on holiday and that he will get some sent over in the next 24 hours. After 2 days nothing. Now I have rang countless times and I am getting no answer so I can only presume he is a fake Thought I was getting a really good deal too

Anyway, I have spotted a 5.4m searider for sale within my budget which needs work. The description goes along the lines of ''has a few patches and some need doing, hull needs repainting.''

It comes with a 65hp suzuki 2 stroke which has a painted cowl so I can presume it is a very old model. I would want to update this. How much would it cost me to replace this outboard with a 70-90hp outboard which is in decent condition and is preferably 4 stroke? Looked on fleebay, gumtree and boats&outboards with not much luck hence me turning to you. Only reason I say 4 stroke is fuel consumption. I can imagine a 2 stroke outboard of that size is very thirsty?

Henry

In answer to your question, £2000-£3000, but it'll be bum heavy with a second hand 4 stroke on. There's a reason that the Yam 80-90hp is the holy grail for the hull. It's far lighter than any of the 4 stroke 90s til you get to a nearly new one, and has loads more bottom end grunt.

Before you go buying something that size, you'd better check out how much fuel it'll burn though.

It'll more than triple your fuel bill. I rarely use less than 50 litres if I take the Sr5.4 out.

Remember though, wide open throttle is going to use a lot of fuel on either 2 OR 4 stroke. It takes a certain amount of fuel to develop that much power, and you can't skirt around that. 4 strokes/new tech 2 strokes only really score on sub-WOT economy.

I suppose if I do end up getting it and doing it up to standard I could always sell it on if it is out of my depth. I would probably first try it out with the 65hp but I doubt it will move very much with the 65?

(Note as well, that your maintenance bills will go right up once you go to something over 4m-a braked trailer is DEFINITELY needed if you fit a 4 stroke on a 5.4, with all the salt water issues that brakes have.

It'll do 28 knots or so with a 65. It'll be juicy though and you'll be running at WOT a lot of the time-which would mean a burn of around 26 litres/hour

Dont' get me wrong-I love SR5.4's to bits. Dont' expect one to be cheap to keep or run though. I certainly wouldn't consider more than a 4m if I was thinking of taking one to uni with me for example.

However, if you can make some money on it...

Exactly. Then I could get a very decent 4m searider for around 3k or so. 3k would definitely get me a proper nice 4m!

I have just finished my GCSEs so have loads of time on my hands so a project is right up my street at the moment.

Walk away. You won't see £3k for that without spending £4k on it.

Motor is 1970s, known for heavy corrosion and probably worth around £300 absolute max.

Trailer is an old caravan chassis, worth about £100 if you can sell it at all.

The console needs changing and the A-frame's scrap.

It's worth what he's asking for it, just. You wouldn't make a profit on it though.

I've still a lot to learn. Needs a whole new retube then because of the various patches on it?

See my edit above

It might not need a retube-if it holds air etc, you might be able to tidy them up. However, the rest of the package just isn't worth spending the money on.

Essentially you've got a pile of scrap there that MIGHT have a resale value, then possibly a bare hull, but given the bodgeup A-frame and console I'd expect water ingress/rot into the transom and the floor.

ok thanks, plan is to find a project. Can't believe I am saying this but I have just got too much time on my hands!!

Sucks having a late birthday so can't get a job till end of july at least.

If you spot any decent looking projects will you send me a PM? I am still learning and need to see what I should walk from and what I should buy. Got a budget without selling my current boat of around £250-£500 for a project to make a bit more...

Cheers for the advice, I definitely need it

With that budget, you'll be lucky but will do

If that SR4 was the one in Trowbridge, keep on at him-I don't think it was a scam.

What SR4 are you talking about? Link?

It was in swansea. It was either stolen or he is a proper half wit. SR4 with the two front forward seats. It had black tubes? (definitely a SR4 though) and came with a 35hp evinrude. He was only asking £500. I will keep phoning. You never know! I spoke to him twice and had good 5 minute convos and my dad hasn't complained about any nasty phone bills so I know it is not that. Maybe he is away I dunno.

Had two pics once of which 1 is attached.

The one in Trowbridge sold on ebay a week or so ago for about 500 quid. It'll be long gone now. Tatty thing, 35hp Johnson on it.

You'd make on that, but not much with the painted tubes.
