30hp 4s - 50hp 2s?

Hi All

I'm new to the forum and would love some advice from experienced boaters out there......

I have a 5m rib with rear bench and separate console and intend to move the console forward and install a jockey to improve balance and comfort - while I'm at it I am contemplating swapping my 30hp 4s for a more powerful 2s.

We use the boat for fun only; short trips and mostly estuary so economy isn't too much of an issue. Weight though, is. Before converting to ribs I had a ski boat with a Yam 50 Autolube and loved it as was cheap and easy to fix and maintain and survived multiple dunkings (not that I intend those anymore!)

Does any one know of the weight comparison between these 2 engines -
Current: Suzuki 30hp 4s
Proposed: Yam 50hp 2s

And welcome any other intel... pros/cons, value, examples of similar jobs

Thanks in advance

Charlie

Fuel consumption and noise levels are the pro's of the 30hp...

I think you will NEED the xtra power of the 50hp...

I would expect the weight to be the same give or take..

Suzuki DF 30 (4 stroke) 243 lbs
Yamaha 50 (2 stroke) 189 lbs max, model dependent.
Note that the Yam would have to be second hand as you can no longer buy them new in this country; killed by emissions regs.

I have a Yam 50, requires prepping for sale. Immaculate (autolube). Not ready yet but will be by start of season.

I thought the suzuki's were all mega light. My tohatsu is around 80kg or so, 30 hp 4 stroke efi all whistles and bells....

I tHink the 2 stroke yamaha's are really well built.... To the point whee they are bullet proof..

Why is it so commonly accepted that just because a two stroke is lighter the pollution it produces is okay. In an estuary I would say four stroke all the way.

Unfortunately I own a two stroke and wish I could afford a four stroke. The oil sheen I see it leave behind sometimes makes me sad.

I owned a yam auto lube for 3 years, never saw a single thing come out of it. I am sure there was as I pured a gallon or so of oil into the tank, but never saw any, and I looked all the time. Never smoked either...

The 50 yammie is 50D. I have a Mariner 40ML with tiller and remote connections. There is a 55BE also. All awaiting mostly cosmetic works and looking at the power heads less than 100 hours each. I'm toying with the idea of selling the lot this year + my Valiant 450, to finance something else. But just an idea at the moment.

And that is a Yam, as listed above by the OP
