300 Verado reliabilty

Just ordered my first Merc for a few years

Im going to be doing about 300 hrs per year around 80% throttle

I know its not going to be economical but how reliable are they?

Is there anything I should look out for, have checked regularly

Does anyone recommend any special oil

The engine is going on a light boat (about 1100kg dry) and will do about 65mph WOT

Its on a Ring Cat so the motor is mounted fairly high

I have been very pleased with the 250 Verados.

Check oil daily, stick to the Quick Silver oil for the Verado, most dealers will give you a good deal on bigger quanities. Get yourself a good dealer, as they can make a huge difference to the whole experience.

The only thing to go wrong for us (400+ hours on two), was the chipped crown gear. Whilst it got noiser over the 8 days we had to run it for, until the replacement was flown in, it never failed and kept us going for up to 8 hours a day.

Any and all issues were sorted quickly and with minimal hassle, by the guys at Barrus.

Steve

Cant give an old age statement, but had a 275 for 3 years not long after they came out ,.. and it had an engine O ring problem on PDI but thereafter was totally faultless and I'd say probably the best engine I have ever owned wasnt cheap to buy or cheap on fuel, but a well engineered bit of kit for all the time I had it

Amazing engine, use genuine parts and service it and you will have very few problems.
The only high hour failure i have heard of was an engine that had over 3000 hours on it had an issue with a valve in the cylinder head. Not sure what the actual fault was though!
They run on Quicksilver synthetic 25w-40 oil or the new Verado oil which is synthetic but is 25w-50 oil.
