200hp Etec

Going to put a 200 HP Etec on the new rib . I have not heard of any bad press about them, any on here that have an Etec and for how long and any problems niggles that you have come across.

Quinquari fit loads of Evinrudes - they are supposed to be brilliant - I would love a 250 but my next engine will be a 300.

I work on a Quinquari/Humber 10m with 2x200hp Evinrudes and to me they seem to be very good engines. Only thing is they don't like running at low rpm for long but what 2 stroke does. Great V6 Sound aswell

I know - I love the lumpy burbling of my 2 stroke Suzuki efi - give it some welly and it is as smooth as silk - wonder what a V8 2 stroke would sound like?

Tim I presume its the light-weight block 200 your looking at , 194KG seems very good to me, looking at a solent rib at the moment but undecided to go with the light-weight, fuel efficient e-tec or to go for the verado with fly-by-wire, power steering and silent running + dont have to keep topping up the oil resevoir. Not had any personal experience with the e-tec but from reviews I've read seems to come out top a lot of the time.

Does anyone know if there is any talk of building a V8 outboard from any manufactures or would it just be too heavy.

Millerbob the e-tecs don't seem to be that bad on oil from my experience. So no constant topping up of oil.

TIM HOPE THIS HELPS YOU
I own an e-tec 225 HO... it is an awsome engine
The only small problem was on low idle speed (45 mins), ran a bit rough after that for a short while...I drive my rib hard most of the time and it does'nt miss a beat, ive had many engines in my 24 years of ribbing and this engine far out peformes anything I have ever owned... dont take my word for it, ask the north west members who have been out with it...

Wel thanks to progress there are no V8 engines around - there are a few rumours of one's coming out but nothing definite.

Back in the days before all this political correctness though you could buy 300 and apparently even 400hp V8s - awesome!!!

I have had the same problem with running at low rpm they don't seem to like it and the engine starts to shudder quite a lot as the plugs get oiled up. When you give them a run at high rpm this soon clears. Normally though they run silky smooth.

My 250 DI runs poorly ar 1500-1800 revs.
it ws worrying me so I am having the mechanic look at it on Thursday
It seems to be a common problem then?

It seems to be a problem when running at that rpm for prolonged periods. Hope this helps.

No it's not a common problem.
I had problems of starting the engine and running at WOT. Solution: new sparkplugs and all was fine. But that was after 100 hours.
OK now I know.

Yes we found that giving the plugs a brush now and again solved the problem. So not using large amounts of plugs unnessiceraly.

Tim we've been very happy with our E Tec 200.

No hesitation in recommending it. (And you know our boat well.)

Over 400 hours on it now.

James,

What oil are you using? XD 50 or XD 100 and for what type of oil is your engine programmed?

I'm using the XD 100 oil (and the engine programmed for XD 100) and i no longer have that problem any more. With XD 50 i had that problem.

Thanks for the comments K and P I love your boat thought you had the bigger engine though any chance of a blast some time. Ged great picture nice looking rib. I have an OPTI 150 HP at the moment and she spends most of her time at low revs and runs up to 4600 when cruising .The new one will be used the same, spark plugs on the Opti get changed every 100 hour service so will do the same for the e tec. There was some issue over the oil to use but that has been fixed now according to Fairweathers I like the sound of them and am a fan of two strokes any way only thing I will miss is the Smart Craft Guages. She will be fitted with a command throttle as getting older now and getting fed up with a wet bum when teaching high speed turns .
Thanks for the comments every one

When I moved from the Opti my biggest fear was losing the Smart Craft gauges, they really are great. I wonder if you can link the engine info through the GPS to get to the same place?

Have got a 150 E Tec on mine, no problems at all and goes great. No servicing either. I run it on the high grade fully sysnthetic oil, which is dearer bus lasts a lot longer.

Hope all goes well.
