2008 Honda BF20 Help. Won't Rev.

Hello.

I'd submitted my outboard to the local Marina as it was bogging down whilst trying to rev. Anything above 1/4 throttle and it starts to splatter if you push it'll just cut out. Starts and idles no problem,

The marina checked all the fuel lines, the tank, it's breather and cleaned the carb in a sonic bath. It's also had new plugs.

However, I tried it today and it seems to have made very little or no difference.

Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? It backfires in the carb so I was thinking running lean or rich?

I'm taking it back to the marina as I've paid for something that hasn't cured the problem. They say they had it at full revs without a problem.

Thanks, I'll put that into to equation.

Is it a big job to do? I can't find a kit or price for a pump. At a labour cost of 45 ph I don't know what'd be the cheaper option.

Last time I did one two years ago £20 odd for the kit easy job take the pump off onto the work bench and strip just keep everything in order and the right way up I set up each side old & new compare then put back together 1/2 hour job 2008 engine proberbly due a service

Does pumping the primer bulb while running smooth things out? If so it's likely the fuel pump. If not, try running with an external tank plumbed in to eliminate the external part of your fuel system (though I would think your shop would have done that.)

Other quick test... as you open it up.. as you feel it dying blip the choke.

If it bursts into life and runs like a dream it's your idle mix is set slightly too lean.

In which case you want your money back. Then post back so we can tell you what screw to turn by about 1/8 of a turn.....

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'll try and get the boat out the garage over the weekend. I had a cut off drum that I filled with water to run the OB in, however it got skipped by 'accident' apparently. It has the hose attachment for flushing, can I run the engine with that attached? Failing that I'll just take it to the local loch so I don't end up in America if the engine fails.

You can't rev it with the flush attachment. In any case, to check it out you need to try it under load.

Could you advise on what screw to turn. Hoping to get the boat out next week for a test run. Hopefully be able to sort or narrow down the problem.

Yep this so important and it annoys me when a dealer hand back an OB that's just been tested in their water butt under no load as "cured" of a running fault.

Greetings. Just an update on the problem. Got the outboard serviced for the season, mentioned the running problem so he had a look. Turns out it was something stuck in the carb (float?) that was effecting the running. [emoji106]
