I find it refreshing that at last faults of a product can be veiwed and discussed openly with the veiw of being able to collect imformation to help others well done and i would hope this is a trend that will continue (also it will in the long run help any manufacturer if he has a good product) Regards Peter

cos there is insufficient fuel to cool the charge

the stoichiometric ratio and the theorys around this will help you in your answers

do a quick google on it

on hipower aero engines they use water meth injection to aid power and cooling of the charge

lots of info available on the web

Of course you also have to be carefull running too rich - excess fuel can wash oil off the bores - unless you then add some castor oil to the fuel - yes even on a 4 stroke.

250 suzuki RECALLED

the 250 is subject to a recall which went to dealers last week, it concerned the 250 specifically and the CPU which I was advised is needing replacement as the reason for the recall is a potential serious failure.
Worth a call to your dealer to confirm this!!

interesting debate

Hi guys,

Very interested to see this debate flourish.

I am looking for a max power outboard.

Yes. I have heard stories about the yanaha 300hpdi blowing its sixth cylinder because of lack of oil.
Not happy with fuel consumptiof of Verado.
I hear good reports regarding 250 Etech and 250 Yamaha HPDI.

What puzzles me if the differing statistics in power output. It appears that Etech quote output @ prop. Is it true that the others quote power output @ camshaft?
I would be keen to get any feedback on the larger engines.

I would be very suprised if Evinrude quote power differently to the others - it would put them at a big disadvantage in the marketing stakes.

Interesting to note the Suzuki recall for the CPU problem - maybe it's causing the engine to run too lean in certain situations which has caused the problems people are reporting? If so it should be a simple fix.

Suzukis aint the only ones. You just to check and check everything twice these days
Last year I had two yams 250 's HPDI 2 t fitted and they have about 50 hrs.
If you do a search on this motor - you will find a lot of good --- and a lot of very bad..However, been a born optumist - only believe in the good and dismiss the bad.

In June, I put the boat back on the water- but before doing so, ran both motors in a tank. Only one tail was evident. The other had to be primed and then the jet was pretty weak. Did a search on this.and ended up with a detailed and excellent analysis by Richjard B on this board on how to change a water pump on a yam 200 same type. Low and behold the back plate of the pump had buckled- giving bad circulation. That's all your need at 5000 rpm to blow the engine. In fact , this was most of the gripes - about heads blowing up.So dont think its the Suzk. My gripe is that THIS WAS A PROBLEM KNOWN TO YAMAHA_ AND THEY DID VERY LITTLE ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically we are only customers.. and who gives a """" about customers???

I don't think it's possible to quote power at camshaft. Crank maybe, but as far as I'm aware all the manufacturers have quoted at prop since the mid 80's. Correct me if I'm wrong please!

?, cam shaft don't make any power, takes power from the crank, merc and omc got in to it on hp, merc was addvertisin 65hp x flow 3cyl modas, it was all that thing could do to make 65 hp at the crank, omc was guna sue for false addvetisin, evey body went to power at the prop shaft, for useable hp.
takes about 10hp on a 3cyl to get to the prop about 5 ft lbs of torque, x2 for a v6.

10hp or 10% Fred? That'd mean my new-to-me 50 mariner 3cyl makes 10hp more than my old 50 4cyl merc?

10hp, takes more if your runin like a "Big foot" set up, from what i got out of it was, the omc vs merc hp thing, was the the omc 3cyl 75hp looper made
about 74-78hp at the prop shaft, the merc 65hp x-flow made 65hp at the crank( if you could get it runnin), seemed about that time "hp at the wheels"
became the new thing, 79-80's

There are two engies on the boat. Both have had a oil-leak from the airintake on the rear of the engines since new.
The engine which was not replaced, is now idling roughly. It has been servised every 100 hours, and was last serviced 30 hours ago.
