2 stroke oil

Im sure this has been talked about a million times before but...
For an old technology mariner 2 stroke what oil is the 'best'? (90 hp 1998 model)
Ive noticed some on ebay
'MARINE OUTBOARD TWO STROKE OIL MEETING TC-W3 SPECIFICATION BY EXOL 25 LITRE'
They also send it to the islands which is great for me. Would this be fine or no?
Other companies are selling synthetic stuff which apparently offers greater protection etc.
Whilst I like to save a pound where I can, I'd prefer to treat the engine with respect as it could be a long paddle home!

Hi dan and welcome. I usually use Quicksilver or Yamlube as long as it has TCW3 your okay.

if you read up on tcw-3 it says it is all independantly tested, so going off that then all tcw-3 oils should be good enough - though im sure there will be differences. im currently trying opus at the moment, which is what my local oil supplier sells.

Cheers Jambo and Festinghouse.
They are selling 25 l for £90 inc delivery. Locally i can get quicksilver for £33 for 4 l. So this is much cheaper...

Hi Dan. Yamalube in the 5 litre bottles from Orkney Tool Hire is what I go for, which I find a good deal compared to getting it mail order with the postage costs. But keen to see what you come up with - happy to split a batch if helpful and drop it off at the peir for you. Cheers. Steve

I have three different types of marine 2 stroke oil Yamalube, Quicksilver and @ 5 litres bought off ebay! Wasn't a problem when I used pre-mix but I now have a separate oil tank on my current engine & want to know if there's a problem mixing them together in the tank or try to use them up individually ?

Well I've been running Exol in my old technology Mariner 2-strokes for the last year and all OK so far. They sent me a data sheet (attached if I've worked the technology OK) as well confirming the TCW-3 status. Comes in a big 25l drum with a cheapo home-made label so there's not much being spent on the packaging but they seem legit... ridiculously cheaper than the main brand stuff though

Although the data sheet does say up to 70hp, the OP has a 90.....

I haven't had a 2 stroke outboard in ages, but I used to mix brands in my old outboard. And I still mix different TCW3 brands in lawn equipment and I've never had an issue. They all seem to play fine together.

Thanks for that. Personally wouldn't mid blowing my lawnmower up ( out today for the first time this year ) but I'd be gutted if my outboards failed.....

Up to and exceeding 70hp.
I dont know. Is it a case of you get what you pay for or is it just a good price.
And should I be looking at the sythetic stuff or am I being too picky for a 15 yr old engine that probably doesn't care!

I use Morris Aquamax. It's comparable to Quicksilver in smell, smoke and oiling rates at tickover on the Yam 85, but very cheap for a 25 litre drum in comparison.
