2 Stroke evinrude should I buy

Can someone clarify the 2 stroke engine ban, reason being I am seriously considering buying a 6.5 metre rib at a very good price which has virtually done nothing in the last 7 years (engine computer showing 72 hours and all yearly service receipts and history available).

My concern is with the 2 stroke ban as the engine is an Evinrude 225 2 stroke which as you would expect looks like new.

Any concerns or should I go for it?

Gee

Engines manufactured or imported (into the EU) for recreational/leisure use must conform to tight environmental contraints. In effect this prevents dealers from purchasing "old technology" 2 strokes from their suppliers to sell to you. Engines can still be imported and sold for commercial use, rescue work and racing.

Very occassionally a dealer may still have some old stock left - but it must be almost all gone by now.

HOWEVER there is no restriction on the sale of 2nd hand engines (that were in circulation before the ban). So the engine you are looking at should not be a problem. In terms of parts these engines are often still being made for commercial use and sale elsewhere in the world so if you check on the manufacturers (worldwide) website then they may well be current production models and so parts still available.

There are newer technology direct injection 2 strokes available which meet the regulations and so are very much available. They offer some of the advantages of 2 str v's 4 str but they are considerably more complicated in terms of engineering/maintainence. They are also more fuel efficient than old tech 2-strokes.

EDIT - oh 7 yr old 225 Evinrude? Its not a DI or FICHT model is it? the reputation of these may not be as good...

The emissions regs that sounded the death knell for carbed 2 strokes isn't retrospective.
Exactly which Evinrude is it? Some of around that age had problems at low hours.

If its a Ficht built after 2002 (it will have the Darth Vader cowling) then it should be ok, will be very frugal on fuel for you as well.
