2 Stroke and 4 Stroke...

Hi all,

With a 10hp... Other than the fact you have to mix oil in with fuel for 2 stroke outboards... are there any other differences?

Advantages/Disadvantages?

Thanks Guys

Hi GTM, the biggest difference is the weight factor. A4 stroke weighs quite a lot more than a 2 stroke of equivelent hp. To my mind though, I will always opt for a 4 stroke due to the improved reliability,no nasty oils to mix, reduced fuel consumption, quieter, and better for the enviroment etc etc.

It also depends on how much you want to spend. A used 2-stroke will be cheaper to buy than the equivalent used 4-stroke. Having said that, you can't make or import new 2-strokes any more so if you want a brand new engine, you'll struggle to find a 2-stroke.

4-strokes have it in terms of efficiency, environment, cleanliness, and they're much quieter.

btw Welcome to the board!

I wish 2 strokes were much cheaper - I am desperate to get a nice 18hp Tohatsu!!!

If you want an engine to sit on a boat and never be moved or taken off then a 4 stroke is fine. If you want something to lug around and carry across a beach or whatever give me the 2 stroke anyday.
