1997 Yamaha 25hp 2 troke stalls on idle

Hi there.

I bought a 1997 Yam 25 hp 2 stroke. It starts fine and pumps lots of water through the tell tale very strongly, it runs fine on a little throttle but keeps on stalling on idle.

The guy put clean fuel in the tank for me today but looking in the tank I can see tiny solids floating. There is a fuel filter before the hand pump but looks rather old/brown so suspect that will need replacing. And the spark plugs are very oily/dirty. The OB only had about 4 hours use since last service but been standing for 2 years so defo a full service in order.

Can anyone recommend a good place to get it serviced near Manchester area and what will a reasonable charge be (ball park figure)?

And any ideas what else to look for?

There's enough people on here to help you out if you fancy giving it a service yourself. You can get the plugs, filter & fuel pump + gasket on eBay. Adjust mixture screw on carb to 1.75-2 turns from the lightly seated position and set tick over. After that it becomes complicated if you have no experience. The gearbox bolts could be stuck making an impeller change a mare. Carb clean is something easy enough but you have to know what to look for. If you get stuck PM me. I'm not too far away in west yorks. There are one or two around Manchester which I'm sure the locals will point you in the direction of.

Thanks RIB-Teccie. I am sure between Rib.net and friends I'll be able to get it sorted. However for peace of mind or shall I say to get it done pretty sharpies I was thinking of letting the pro's handle this one but open to any help on offer. Defo going to learn how to do this myself in future...

With the current weather, I doubt anyone will be able to get you in that quickly.

Its likely it needs a carb clean, engines dont do well sitting for long periods with modern petrol on them.

Honestly, a basic service is really simple. Even changing the impellor is just awkward, rather than difficult

I can see the misses coming home to find an outboard in 100 pieces all over her kitchen table (no garage/manly shed)...

Can you guys point me in the right direction then, re parts to get, how to articles and what will need doing etc.

Its possible, but i think the title is correct and text is wrong, 4 stroke kits usually have engine oil included.

Its not a problem, OP just needs to ring Pacer with the engine serial number, job done.

Ok, I had a few spares with the outboard.

I put in new spark plugs, new fuel filter. New tank, new fuel line and hand pump and clean fuel. Tank is vented but still no idle, starts first pull and ok on throttle, died a few times even with throttle and back fired a few times. Any suggestions?

I can get it in for a service tomorrow if all else fail.

Also what's best to clean the other fuel tank out with, sucked out all old fuel but still particles in there...

An old trick with a stalling engine is to pull the choke half open as it is about to stall, if the engine picks up, the chances are you have a carb problem.

Hi

You may have something blocking a jet, try taking the air box off start your engine rev it and put your hand over the carb the sudden presure change may move some shit.

I had this problem with mine I turned the idle jet screw out (anticlockwise) 1/2 turn sorted
