Hi

can i make a daft point. the fuel bill on this engine will be huge and if you can even afford half of that bill you would be better off getting a newer engine. Sorry to be doom and gloom but at nearly £1.50 now a litre I would do your sums before opening that guzzler up!

i'm going to make a not so daft point???? that since it is a new engine to the poster they can't/won't spend 10-15k ish??? for a "new" 200hp engine.

given the average boater is 50 hours per season (i have to say i doubt most here do that much-i don't)and much of that will be spent at half throttle or less going on averages the fuel difference won't be more than what, 30% more fuel used versus a new engine?

cheers

Hi, can I ask you nicely to reread my post and I think it is dangerous to assume the persons expected hours, we have people using them from 20-300 with an average of 100. I am also confused as to your 30% point as this does not relate to any data we have.

Dave

average data for leisure boats is about 50 hours. my assumption was no more dangerous than you assuming everyone has 10k to blow on a new engine surely?

before you say anything-i went from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke- i'm explicitly aware of the fuel difference like the back of my hand. i have read your fuel data comments before and all i can say is MY experience is i save about 30% in fuel on a like for like basis.

even worst case scenario and we assume on your list the user is a 300 hour per year boater-i recon a 200hp lump will churn through say 20 gallons an hour tops on high cruise speed?

4.55 * £1.42= £6.46 * 20 *300 = £3876

a quick google finds a 200hp etec of 2011 vintage as costing £15000 inc vat.

a quick google again finds the etec will likely churn about 15 GPH on a fast cruise (i said 30%, google is suggesting 25% so i was being kind). so your saving say 5 GPH or so with an engine change. i would suggest that is highly unlikley but lets role with it for the purposes of the discussion.

5GPH * £6.46 *300= £946 per year saving. so it would take 15 years in fuel alone saving wise to pay for that ETEC not with standing any residule value/servicing etc ofcourse.

having a new engine is ofcourse a nice luxury but with all due respect to suggest the OP basically ditch his new to him engine as it needs the carbs cleaned is pretty excessive IMHO.

cheers

Hi

as I said above I did not say a new engine I said a newer engine and asked the person to do their own sums.

re the fuel consumption,we will need to agree to disagree on that and also the hours the person will use the the rib as I can not see where he stated this but if he did and I am wrong on the this I am sorry.

not looking to start a war here either

While I agree with you totally about the motor , that link is to a scam and isn't really a good example

When £6k will see you a decent used big HP modern fuel injected 2 stroke, it's a no-brainer.

With respect Dave, I am fully aware of the fuel consumption that this beast if capable of. If I had thousands of pounds to spend then I would have gone for something a little newer and more efficient, but I don't. And as has been pointed out by Xk59D, it would take a seriously long time reap the savings from a more efficient engine, given the capital outlay of it's cost. If I was seeking financial advice, I wouldn't be looking here.

no war intended either, just trying to offer a differing view.

btw-while i'm here, some of the best engines i've seen are 20 years old and never get serviced. perhaps i'm going about this boating lark all wrong servicing mine :-)

cheers

So after a thorough strip down, clean and rebuild of the carbs yesterday and a general clean up, the engine started and ran perfectly

Only problem is that it wouldn't start using the battery, it required the use of the manual pull cord. So I'm thinking I've either got a battery that's not giving out enough juice or a lazy starter motor?

Any thoughts?
Cheers.

I should watch yer manners wiLlfie - a man who pull starts a 200hp V6 is a force to be reckoned with.

get a fresh battery on it directly, not via jump leads before doing anything else.

cheers

ive had battery cables fail - quick check is to connect the battery as normal then put a jump lead from the neg to engine block to give it another earth.

Glad you got it running. My '86 V4 did the same, lazy starting, it was the negative cable that burnt out. If you check the length of the cables you should find a hard lump which you can't flex or is crunchy!!

On another point, my motor is old and a bit tatty but it still works, and works well! I spoke to a Suzuki salesman at southampton about replacing it with a newer one and he thought I was mad, He'd rather spend the money on fuel in my V4. I haven't looked at another engine since!!

But if I did have the money......
