That might be a good idea.

Quick reply is an option in vBulletin, but I've always thought that it's another non-feature. It's on some forums that I visit, but I must say I've never used it.

It's yet another thing on the "possible but yet to be convinced" list.

There have been a few suggestions:

It's a shame that there's not a 'w**ker' smilie on this site.

Whilst I agree that there are moments when the infamous "chinscratcher" smilie would indeed appear to be in order, I don't think it's particularly suitable for such a genteel and friendly place as RIBnet

mmm... he could if he wanted to. They are not actually free: vBulletin costs money, the server costs money, adding some of these features will demand more bandwith or server time which (directly or indirectly costs money), John's time for setting up the features has value. The site meets all the key functional requirements for everyone free of charge at the moment. If someone wants added functionality why not pay for it. If you wouldn't pay for it - you can't want it that much. And since you are a suporter anyway, because you appreciate the value of the content, then the added features are a bonus. Why should you subsidise those who don't bother to contribute and not get an offering that offers you something extra as a thank you?

How long would you like to have to edit a post? At the moment you have an hour to make any changes, with a couple of minutes grace before it adds "Last Edited by..."
A few more minuted before the last edited notice please. Just to give time to revisit the post and check for typos or other errors. I know there is the preview post but I often miss stuff until I've posted.

In your options you can now set the number of posts to show on a page to 20, 30, 50 or 100. The default is still 10 - maybe that should be increased now that most people are on fastish connections?
A good move, excellent.

There is already a "Top" link in the bottom right hand corner of the page,
So there is! I've never noticed it before.

Do you often actually need to go back to the top of a page though?
All the time to click 'New Posts' to find the replies to threads.

One more thing. If the thread to which you've just posted could list in the new posts page, above or below the line, it would save hunting for it when you realise there is something needing to be edited or added. eg. when I went to take a photo to add to a thread, because the thread had not been added to meantime it does not appear in the list so I have to go off the the forum page and search it out. I seem to remember it was the case before the big software update a good while back.

Ta.

I must admit that I quite like the idea that people have an extra second or two to consider their posts before they start typing. Perhaps I should implement a "slow reply" feature for selected users!

I think the more 'coooool, hip, trendy and fashionable a web site is, the poorer the quality of the content. I'd much rather have an 'old fashioned' web site that's easy to read and full of solid content and comment than some fashionable place that's full of fluff and no substance.

Only one thing has niggled me - the apparent need to scroll to the top of the page to get back to the forum. Never noticed the 'top' button until it was pointed out.

There is no reason these two things should be linked.

Hmmm I think its all down to the integrity of the posters, of which, this site possesses many valued contributers .. the layout wont change a thing, instead it will encourage others if it looks good IMO

If it ain't broke don't fix it

Newer isn't always better

I love Ribnet just the way it is - the best sites in the World are the simplest - look at Google for example!!!
