Edit: it happened as I typed this reply!

I've now gone through & sorted it to the way I like it. My only real moan now is the new visuals, and that's only because it now looks like a forum and not like what I'm actually supposed to be doing right now.... I do like them in every other respect.

Having had a try on wind-up last night I can assure those of you that think things have slowed down that even if you are on the worst broadband connection in recorded history it's not a problem! Granted that machine is a diferent cookie to this one, so I got the full whack of the new site last night.....eventually!

An other observation about having the community bit totally minimised is that new members & their opening questions may be missed by the majority if everyone has that section shrunk. I know this is probably a simple question with a PITA solution, but hows about anyone with a post count of 1 (i.e new) gets the post mirrored on that section - means people could be "found" in the time honoured tradition & their questions answered in an appropriate section, but people can also introduce themselves "officially" in the way I assume that section is designed to do.

Q for the site techs, if I minimise the scrolling pic bar, does it stop the need for it to download the pics, or does that happen in the background whether minimised or not? Most of the avatars are small and now in my local cache anyway, but at 3.1k/s flat out, and with Windows inevitably trying to update itself in the background the last thing I need is a steady stream of half meg jpgs......

I'm hoping it might encourage me to do more work!

I believe it is just hidden but still loaded. Wouldn't have thought the files were half meg each though - just a big thumbnail...

EDIT - the album pictures are thumbnails which are between 5 and 10 KB each (from a small sample I looked at). The album has 3 pictures in it so whilst not ideal if you are on ultraslow / dialup / payper MB it is not that bad.

Heh! I change browsers all the time between chrome and firefox - seems like they both dislike different types of site depending on what update they've just had, and I dislike IE so I don't particularly mind switching about. For what it's worth I really like the new layout - makes it look a lot more professional and the random gallery is brill.

Ribnet has stopped logging me off
Just went through the sequence of deleting history and cookies once again and that's it, no more being logged off.
Team, if it is something that you have done, thank you, if it is the all seeing entity that rules 1s and 0s then all praise to you O great one (and nought )

Jambo - you should be able to turn off the banner ads in the user CP again (there was a bug which stopped that working last night but it seems to be fixed now. Or are you saying you want banner ads, just not irrelevant ones? That might take a bit more effort for the proper admins to set up.

Ashby - I think you are missing the point. There is a problem, the techies are working on the problem (Ian M's post may even suggest they have fixed it) - but in the meantime if logging in is such a big issue then use a browser like Chrome or Firefox and it seems to be fine. No body is making you change browser. I assume that you've never changed anything within your business and then had a few glitches which have needed ironed out? Worse still if you change something that should work but it turns out that someone completely independent (in this case Microsoft) have interpreted the rule book differently (or just made it up completely) and it impacts your business.

thats nothing to do with RIBnet - thats just because its a better browsing experience IMHO - and I don't know anyone who has used Chrome or Firefox properly for a few days and then decided they prefer IE. On every machine I've tried Chrome opens faster that IE when you first launch it (perceptibly so) and pages either open just as fast or faster - on top of which they've got rid of some screen clutter, and modernised the UI/UX. The benefit of this bug could be you try something new and find a better internet experience for everything - but nobody has suggested that IE users should just be ignored/forced to change browser.

I agree there .. Ive always liked IE as its always what Ive been used to .. but after trying FF and Chrome, I now like them all for various reasons, but if its web security you are after .. forget IE... its hopeless, and it is slow and because its code is not open source .. which means only microsoft controls it .. its open to hacks left right and centre, whereas the likes of firefox is made by an open group of programmers who have each others well being at heart, and its in their own interest to make it as hack and bug free as possible, .. and fast .. thats why its better

Ditto.. Firefox for yell.com, chrome for radarvirtuel.com, ie for everything else.. ie works fine, when used properly for a few days...

As for my humble opinion on the new layout, tbh, I still miss windows 3.1... Life changes, operating systems change, forums change.. As long as JK is still open to bribery when it comes to banning members, then the changes are liveable with..

btw, those who don't want google adsense adverts may want to d/l the google opt out cookie.. Works fine for me..

I'm just a Luddite. I've got a plugin for Firefox called Oldbar-looks just like FF v2 whatever upgrades it does

Trust me, at a nominal 30K/S an extra 30K takes a huge amout longer to download than the spec might imply...... Noty a prioblem if it is transferred last, and It's fine if you do it after the Windows / Virus updates, but on dialup, anything to "prune" the data bundle can only be a good thing....
