What about turning on the Post Rating feature of vBulletin?

What like green blobs, you need to do a search on that saga.

Do you mean Thread Rating, or User Reputation?

Andy, why do you feel it would be worthwhile?

Can you point me to a few sites that use it where it serves a useful function?

I don't see that it has any real value, which is why I have deliberately not implemented it, so I would need to be convinced!

Er, so we can vote on the message threads that are imparting genuinely useful information to the users of this Forum.

Conversely, we can give * to the majority of my crappy posts.

What is the downside of implementing Thread Rating?

It would be fascinating to see a frequency graph of the thread length. There are many threads that just have a few posts, and some really interesting threads that get lost - would a rating system help with maintaining interest i good threads, or do we all have the collective attention span of - well the hole shot of a suzie 300!

Thread rating? Based on what? Usefulness or accuracy of the information given...or simply that your views match those of the poster? There are those on here that have vast experience and publish only the knowledge that they have and yet some of them are a little..shall we say “brusque”.. but the knowledge is real just the same…there is one boat builder in particular that I think falls into this category ..and you can’t get much more knowledgeable / experienced than that…and then there are those that put forward nothing more than information gleaned from Google (and the like) rather than any real, first hand knowledge … but put it across in such a way as though they have that experience and are quite convincing….. mostly this is harmless.. but one day it’ll go wrong…”Toluene” anyone? So I vote No to thread rating… for what it’s worth in this “Iron Fisted” Dictatorship……

In my experience, although it sounds like a nice idea, it actually adds little or nothing to the usefulness of the site, becoming useless clutter.

That was why I asked if you could point out some sites where it works well, so I could see how they do it.

Each new version of vBulletin adds new "features", some of them are excellent (image resizing, the plug-in system, improved spam control etc), others just add things for the sake of it (thread icons are another "feature" that appears to serve little real purpose).

Requests to activate vBulletin features " because you can" are unlikely to get far. On the other hand if you can demonstrate that they will add something useful to the site then I'm much more likely to agree.

John

I'd be interested too. I'll see if there's a reasonable way of doing it.

The average thread length is just over ten replies, which I think indicates a pretty good level of discussion. There are very few zero-reply threads which is defininitely a good indicator!

I prefer to think of RIBnet as a benevolent dictatorship rather than a fascist one, but there's probably not much difference from where you're standing!
