What is this - "Go to first new post" thing - it's long and cumbersome and doesn't look "right".

You were seeing the "alt" text because the icon image hadn't loaded. It happens occasionally, normally when your internet connection is being a bit flakey. As you discovered it's transient and sorts itself out.
