My guess is he sold the boat to a friend for vastly more than he paid for it and doesn't want them to find his thread on it.

Some members wish to leave. For no reason or reasons known only to them.

However by asking for an account to be closed could mean please make the account unusable again by the person asking.

This forms some sort of closure for the person that asked for it...

To remove all the past posts they have made may well not mean close the account.

More people join than leave but there are many many more members that have joined but never posted or in most cases never made another forum visit for their own reasons.

Just for clarity, having consulted the higher authorities at head office, we will close accounts on request but will not delete old posts.

Taking the long view John I do think it will save you some angst in the future from the people who wish to leave us for whatever reason.

Yep, it's no problem to us and if it makes people happier then there's no reason not to do it.

Am I missing something (second time I've said that today, It must be age) If you close the account, but leave the post "footprint", then bu66er all has changed other than the dear departed can no longer post, which is the same as err, not posting Everything the poster has ever done is still there for posterity, so what's the point apart from an empty gesture

I think you've underestimated the "empty gesture" bit Pikey., As Sonar said, some may just want closure - the idea perhaps that there is no more to be said as no more can be said. Until HQ smoothed the road there was nothing that could be done. Now we'll be able to provide some with what they need doing - ultimately it's about keeping people happy.

Can't you just change the name of closed/frozen accounts to 'Stroppy_b*gger', 'MoodyBloke', 'PatheticWhiner', etc?

'Stroppy_b*gger', 'MoodyBloke', 'PatheticWhiner

People leave forums for their own reasons.

Some that have left may well be the names you have mentioned above.

But as for closed/frozen accounts being named any of the above .

Comments like that make members feel the need to leave..

Every member is a valued member..

It was tongue in cheek.

I, sir, take exception to you taking exception to my post. Now, how does one close an account?

Er, I can't but JK might be keen to test his latest Device? That said, seeing as how you won't be needing that dog anymore, I'll have it.

Given JK's new power, & the assumption that there will now be a raft of folk queuing up to be deleted, why not put a "self destruct" button on the profile page? That way , people will be able to quietly self-immoliate without any histrionics or final "point to prove" statements. They'll be able to shuffle off the Ribnet coil at their leisure, a sort of Ribnet Dignitas👍

Renaming deleted accounts to maintain anonymity isn't realy a bad idea to keep the post continuity it could be a serial no eg "account no12345 no longer a registered user"

Beamishken, the downside to that is that its not always obvious who replies like this are to. If someone has a genuine reason to change username then the techies in the US have ability to do this.

You certainly can't - anyone that really wants to disappear probably doesn't want to know about https://web.archive.org/
