Email notifications

I use instant notifications from subscribed threads rather than the app, however they don't seem to be working quite properly, is this a setting for me to change or a general issue...I've had a look in the User CP but can't find anything. Currently I think it is not sending another notification until i check that thread specifically, not just log into the forum as a whole?
