On a toobless mission tomorrow. A couple of my mates (landlubbers) have bought an old 17' dory to go fishing and they're out for the maiden voyage on the evening tide tomorrow. Went to see their investment last night - what a heap of shite!, even if it has got a 1990 Yam 70 (with PTT!) If I'm not online by 21:00, call the coastguard!

good luck with the new prop - give it some air

Oh Heck! You must be the only one. I'll try to remember to get right on your nerves fairly soon.

John - Ive just read through this thread and It does actually seem as you read through it that you are lightening up a little.

I have some comments and a suggestion.

The reason the chat room doesn't really work - is that it relies on everyone being online constantly all at the same time - This in my opinion is a level of "geekiness" beyond your average boat owner. Because of this the Forum is a great medium to have idle chat as you can post your comment and go away and do some stuff and come back later and check the replies and so on - even if you miss several days the conversation is preserved and you can catch up and add your points which is ideal for the slightly more casual computer user.

We all love RIBnet - indeed many people I now call friends I have met on these pages.

I do however sympathise with your desire to keep the content largely useful and RIB related.

So I have the perfect solution :-

Open a new forum heading in the "Rib Talk" category called "Idle Chat" or as on my forum "Random Ramblings" or something similar and promote this as a place for everyone to just chat and communicate and have fun. This section can then be set to auto prune threads that have not had a reply for say, a month, and everyone will be happy. We can all return to yakking away without a care - alice can spout his usually pointless rubbish - but most importantly you preserve the RIB orientated content on the rest of the forum as there will only ever be a months worth of worthless idle chit chat posts at any one time.

This also gives you a place to move any discussions on the rest of the site that you feel have degenerated into worthless babble. knowing that they will be there long enough to be read by those that are interested but will be autoimatically deleted once the interest has gone.

I do agree with you that the content of your forum is important - as it was the content after all that enabled us all to find the site in the first place.

I would be interested to hear what others thought of my suggestion but to me its the perfect solution to the problem and win win for everybody...

It was sounding very good until I got to the bit about 'worthless babble'. Then I decided that you could shove your suggestions up your a**e.

Does make sense Roy. I've also noticed that some members have been known to hijack a decent interesting thread and send it off on some locally based witless tangent. Most of this appears to emanate from the St.Austell area. These 'babblings' could also be removed from the original 'hijacked' thread and placed into the new section.

Roy, great suggestion

and i do believe alice had two worthy posts out of the 70 so cut the girl some slack.

nice to see some support for Alice coming out of the woodwork and a general interest in a bit of humour.

Ah yes, 'Babbling', reminds me of that god awful noise your opti was making on full chat, got really loud whem alongside but as I pulled away soon faded into the background, reminds me of the charge of the light brigade but in your case your only wasting 60 horses!

Yes I think Roy's idea is good, this forum is first and foremost a superb database of Rib info and to loose track on an informative/interesting thread is a shame (Eksrae's excellent Gulf Of Mexico thread springs to mind). Forgive Alice, she's ugly even by Goongumpus standards!
